A OVERCAST & CRISP DAY IN SUNNY MANILVA ON SUNDAY WITH THE THREAT OF RAIN;

SUNDAY 3rd/ JANUARY 2016.

Yet another nice lie in this morning as ‘Reina’ slept all night in her duvet by the side of the bed and ‘Charlie’ came up and joined us a little later than normal; we then went out for our first walk of the day with the dogs, overnight it had been raining but at the moment its clear and dry, the forecast is for more rain during the day and sadly it could also rain on Monday threatening the ‘Three Kings Parade’ in the evening. Watch this space.

As we were out this morning and walked up to Calle Mar we spotted that our local ‘ Bar Rojas’ was open and all set up for business, over the past few days there had been some activity inside, a young couple, ‘Adriano & Susanna’ have taken over/rented the business and welcomed us, we will give it a try at lunchtime, weather permitting, for a drink as I’m having a take-out ‘Paella’ from Bar Castillo for lunch! Watch this space.

After breakfast of ‘Crispy Smoked Bacon Butties’ with lots of ‘HP’ Brown sauce and a mug of steaming tea the ‘Pirate Chef’ with the help of his able assistant got this evenings supper on the go; I made a dish of my now famous ‘Boulangere Potatoes’ – sliced local Onions layered with sliced local potatoes, the three layers are hand cut to start and then for the final layer I use my ‘Mandoline’ slicer ( thanks Josie !) for the very thin top layer, each layer is seasoned and then I use a good strong Chicken stock to cover the dish before studding the top with butter, it goes in the oven this evening until its crisp & brown! We are having ‘Braised Lamb Shanks’ in a Minted Gravy and just some Baby Brussels Sprouts sprinkled with chopped Chestnuts, Carrot Batons & Garden Peas. See below;

We are taking things easy today as next week is promising to look rather busy down here on the ‘Costa Del Sol’ as we are out and about on our travels; on Monday both the dogs are being collected, yesterday over in New York the folks went on a spectacular trip to see the ‘Statue of Liberty’ and then ’Ellis island’ -  with more great views back to the new skyline of the city, see the picture below; we will miss ‘Charlie’ ( See below ) in particular as he has been with us for two weeks and is such a good dog, great company and a real character, ‘Reina’ will be back with later in the week as we settle back into the old routine and then towards the end of January she’s going to be here five days a week!

We are going over to Marbella for the ‘sales’ on one day and then are planning to get together with Joyce on another day, we will need some shopping at the end of the week, on Wednesday its the ‘Dia De Los Reyes Magos’ – ‘Three Kings Day’ – I confirmed our order for a fresh ‘Rosca De Reyes’ cake with Antonio this morning which are made in the local bakery in the village; we have our fingers crossed for the street parade tomorrow evening in the meantime!

Yesterday in the football there were some surprise results; Liverpool lost 2-0 at West Ham and then Manchester City scored twice in the last five minutes to win 1-2 at Watford, over here Barcelona could not score in the ‘Derby’ game at Espanyol - 0-0 - so lost their top spot in ‘La Liga’ to Atl.Madrid on points. The horse racing from Sandown Park & Ayr was very good with the excellent coverage on Channel 4.

Last night after supper we watched a film on TVE 1 “ Arbitage “ from 2012 with Richard Gere, the ever watchable Susan Saradon and Tim Roth in a thriller about company fraud and a cover up over a road death, the ending is ambiguous and leaves you wondering!

Will return shortly !

PS; ' Charlie' relaxing on his favourite settee watching the TV !

Thoughts for the Day; See above.
