MANILVA,THE BRASS BAND COMPETITION.

Friday 29th August.

In the morning we went down to Sabinillas to the supermarket for the weekend shopping and at the same time we called into the bookshop to exchange some book’s and then we bought Bacon and English Pork sausage’s from the English butchers in Puerto Duquesa. We had a early supper of Cold Boiled Ham,Chorizo Fried Eggs and Chips! before we walked around to Bar Castillo where we had arranged to meet Mano and Anna. The village was already very busy as we waited for the start of the Brass Band Competition, the three bands marched into the village from different directions into the Main street up to the Bandstand which was in front of the old town hall. Each band played four tunes including Pasodoble’s and a modern tune in their programme.Sra. del Valle came on first, then Torremolinos and Manilva last. The very large village crowd was joined by supporters from the other bands seated around the band stand and the whole show was filmed by Manila TV to be shown later. The atmosphere built up as it became time for our band to go on stage, led by the Director of Music,Fernando Antinolo Bueno who is the Head of the School of Music as well as being a champion Clarinet player, they finished their set with the Theme Tune from the Pirates of the Caribbean which was by far the best of the night and it was very clear who the winner’s would be!The audience went wild as they finished and the Mayor came on stage to name the winner!MANILVA!! The picture’s below show’s it as it happened but you have to be here to take in the atmosphere in the village as we sat outside at one’clock in the morning with the young children playing in the street and drinking a toast to the Manilva Brass Band.We were joined by Andy and Anna who we have known for a couple of year’s,they live on the other side of the village and Andy has worked for Mano for over ten years; Andy is also a bit of a computer expert and has helped me in the past and is going to call in and fix my virus problem next week.Anna is a local lady and her family live in the village,so we see her all the time.It was Andy’s birthday at 12’o’clock so we ended up later at his house sat on the patio singing Happy Birthday in the cool night air and feeling no pain!

Wednesday 27th. August.

In the morning Anna called in for a coffee on her way to Carlos’s house and caught me making a curry for supper so we asked her to join us ! My small PC has suddenly caught a virus even though I’ve anti-virus systems, this is the first time that I’ve had a problem like this and I will have to ask a friend here in Manilva for help! I use the Acer PC to try things out and practice then go to my main Dell PC which has all the programmes etc.which is in use every day for E-mails,Blog,Facebook,News,Radio.TV and music. We have the radio on all day in the lounge, tuned to Kiss FM, the 24hr.music station that plays English and Spanish pop and golden oldies, this is also the music that we drive to in the Smart car.We also on the CD player listen to our collection of our favourite’s including at the moment Amy and Duffy! In the kitchen we have a small system that we use to listen to our Spanish learning CD’s and local radio. On the PC in the office I have a Super bass sound system which blasts out Radio One,Rem FM,Spectrum FM and a Musicovery interactive web-radio station which you choose the type of music and tracks on screen from the 50s to now- It’s unbelievable!! On the roof terrace we are going to use the I-Pod speaker’s after Tim send’s it back and I learn how to use it! Anna came round in the evening and joined us for Tinto de Verano’s on the roof terrace before we had one very hot curry with Basmati rice for supper.

MANILVA.

Tuesday 26th.August.

After tea and toast on the roof terrace Brenda is doing the washing as it’s a good drying day with a little breeze coming from the mountains behind the village, meanwhile I’ve been finding my way around the new web pages and later in the afternoon as I clicked onto the BBC news page I found my way onto BBC Radio and was listening to past programme’s on Radio 2 and Radio 4. I already have BBC 1 online and catch Chris Moyles and Jo Wiley in the morning. Tim has taken my I Pod back with him and is going to put new music and films on it so we can then use it on the roof terrace as we have a I Pod speaker system! In the early evening as it cool’s down a little we sit on the roof terrace with our drinks and read,at the moment I’am reading a Wilbur Smith book that Tim left and Brenda is reading a Alex Cross thriller by James Patterson. For supper we had Smoked Trout Omellete’s with Saute potatoes.

Monday 25th. August.

We had a quiet day at home and caught up with the chore’s around the house in the morning as it is very hot and humid during the day.At lunchtime we walked to the butchers and picked up some Pork cutlets for supper as we now shop daily in the village using all the local ingredients; we have just been given a large box of Manilva grapes freshly picked this morning, they are very sweet as the local wine is made from the grapes as they dry out and look like Raisins, the “ Noble Rot” makes the wine more like a cross between Sherry and Maderia and comes in three varieties,Dry,Medium and Sweet.During the next three weekends there is something happening in the village, this Friday it is the Brass Band Competition in the main street, then the following weekend it’s the Grape Festival outside the Town Hall at the top of our street and then the next weekend there is a Cultural Festival with music, singing, dancing and drinking! Watch out for the reports and pictures as it happens from your correspondent in Manilva- Me!

Sunday 24th. August.

We had planned to have a normal Sunday at home and after a late start we had our usual brunch,as Brenda potted about and I watched the Grand Prix from Valencia and then the spectacular closing ceremony of the Olympics. In the evening there was more sport,Real Madrid played Valencia in a Super Cup match and won and the highlights of the Premier League including Liverpool and Manchester City winning!During the last few days I have gone online with MSN news,ITN news and Sky news which all give very good interactive video newcasts and along with the BBC news I now have instant coverage of the news at it happens, as well as reading the Daily Express and Daily Mail online,I also have five local Radio stations on line and a small TV monitor in the office to watch the local Manilva TV that is broadcast from just a few meters away; I am still working on and putting together a Radio/TV. Programme and have been live on Citytalk FM in Liverpool as a VIP contributor from Southern Spain. In the early evening between watching the TV which we have only in Spanish to help with our Spanish speaking and learning I checked out the e-mails and Facebook,On one of the pages some new pictures had been posted from Matt,Michelle's partner of their beautiful daughter,Holly and as we clicked through them some pictures appeared of another beautiful baby girl in a house we recognized as Carol’s,it was Jasmin, Carol’s older daughter, Yola’s daughter, who lives in Switzerland with her husband Dave. At the same time in the picture Ben and his partner Andrea’s new born baby daughter,Freya could be seem with all the Mellor Clan! So we immediately tried to contact them on the Skype phone but with no luck until we got through to Michelle at her house in Preston and found out that the gathering had taken place on Saturday,Michelle had some news of her own,she is pregnant again and is expecting the baby in March! Congratulations, Matt and Michelle! We then spoke to Carol in Willaston and she told us that Yola was also pregnant and expecting the baby in March as well!! Congratulations Dave and Yola!!! We caught up with Yola this morning at Dave’s parents house in Chorley, they are only over for four day’s and are making the rounds of their family’s.So Carol has gone from no grandchildren to three very quickly and five by March next year! Great news on a good news day! I've just added the link above from our Facebook page, click on it to see the babies picture's.

MANILVA.

Saturday 23rd. August.

As we had our tea and toast on the roof terrace it was another very hot and sunny day so Brenda decided to do the washing, just one problem, the outlet hose from the washing machine came away from the wall drain, flooded the kitchen and all the fuse’s in the house blew!Meanwhile I caught up with the blog page and more e-mails to family and friends after fixing the fuse! As the sun moves round we go onto the roof terrace at about 6-30pm and have a cool drink, during the day we drink lots of chilled water. In the early evening Mano and Anna called in as they were out walking the dogs and Mano had taken the night off,so we watched some English football on the TV.They asked us to out for some Tapas later and picked Fabio up from his Spanish grandparents as Carlos and Ana Mari were working. At Bar Castillo which is always busy Mano ordered a selection of Tapas,Garlic Potato salad,Russian salad with Tuna,Baby Octupus with fried Potatoes in Paprika for starters with the crisp local Pan Bread then small Gambas on sticks, stuffed Baby Green Peppers in a Tomato Salsa and the house special that are Tim’s favoutite now!,warm Crisp Mini Baguettes filled with small Chorizo sausage!! It looks like we are going to house sit for Mano and Anna during September as they are going to North Wales for two weeks on holiday so we will look after the two dogs and two cats as we did at the start of the year.

MANILVA.

Thursday 21st.August.

We had to get up at the crack of dawn,6-30am. to take Tim to the airport in Malaga so as we could be sure and beat any traffic jams on the Autovia,as it happens we had no problems and we where back in the house by 9-00am. Tim phoned to say that he was just passing through the customs and later just after lunch he phoned from the beach in Colwyn Bay as he was walking Jasper, the dog, to say that it was very cold and cloudy! We are now settling back into our normal life here in Manilva after the visit of the “ King ” We are already missing him! As I caught up with the e-mails and the blog page we had a nice comment from Penny in Bridnorth who we stayed with at this time last year, thank’s and also a Googlemail from Tim’s sister Jane in Colwyn Bay who we had not spoken to for a little while, so good to hear from you Jane!

Friday 22nd. August.

As usual on a Friday we went over to Estepona to do some shopping and called into the bank at the same time.On the way back we stopped at the garage to check on the Winnebago,it started first time,as we were in the Winnebago three people called in, a Spaniard, a Dutch and a Belgium gentleman to look round and make contact just by chance! In the afternoon we called Tim,who was out but Thea answered the phone so we had a long chat with her and caught up with all the news,it was great to hear Thea’s voice as we had not spoken to her in a long time! We have also sent Jane our dear friend from Chester an e-mail as she has just come back from Mallorca, her 3/4 trip to Spain this year! In the evening we had a light supper of Pan Fried Sea Trout in a Lemon Butter sauce and then caught up with the Olympics on TV.As I am typing this Great Britain has just won another Gold medal in Boxing, so the total is now 19!

COSTA DEL SOL.

Sunday 17th.August.

The forecast for today is 37 degs. as we had a light breakfast on the roof terrace, we new that we were in for a hot day as the sun beat down on us.We went over in the afternoon after our shower’s, which we usually leave until late in the evening,to Elviria and the Beach House restaurant. As we are now regular customer’s we had a warm welcome and had a nice table on the terrace under the shade. After having our Gin@tonic and Bacardi@ coke's Brenda chose for a change a warm Lobster dish with fresh Aspargus, green salad and Hollandaise sauce accompanied with Jersey New potatoes whilst Tim and I had the Roast Rib Eye of Scotch Beef, served rare on a huge Yorkshire pudding resting on creamed Leeks with crisp Roast potatoe’s,Cauliflower and Broccoli florets and baby Carrots.More Roast potatoes and the excellent Jus Roti gravy came along as we ate! The house recommended Rioja Reserva 2000 was to die for as we took in the views on the beach and across to Gibraltar and Africa.Tim and Brenda finished off with the excellent black coffee and two large warm Soberano brandies !! Yet another memorable Sunday lunch at the Beach House.Doug and Chris could not join us for drinks before lunch so we left a birthday card that Brenda had made up and arranged for a birthday surprise tonight for Chis!We then drove back along the coast road and showed Tim the area after San Pedro and down into Estepona where we went along the promenade and into the old town before we passed the new Bull Ring, which had a Bullfight on,and then called into the Marina and Fishing port for a couple of drinks on the terrace over looking the Marina in a bar which we used a lot when we had the scooter and the owner gave us another nice welcome.Mano phoned us from Manilva and asked us to join him for a drink with Anna so we made our way back up to our house and walked round to Bar Castillo, they had Fabio with them as Carlos and Ana Mari where working.Later in the warm balmy evening we walked down to Carlo’s Antique bar to show Tim and also play some pool with Mano and Anna,Tim kept the North Wales team’s end up-a sign of a mis-spent youth! Meanwhile I shot off on the back of a quad bike around the village and through the vine fields and back onto the by-pass thanks to Francisco,Anna Mari’s brother! We ended the evening back at Bar Castillo which was very busy with local families and had some excellent tapas at 11-30pm to end a perfect day!

MANILVA,TIM'S VISIT.

Sunday 10th August.

On Saturday night after the parade the village and the bars were very busy so we went around to Bar Castillo and joined in with the crowds and had some tapas and watched the Senoras and Senoritas in their finest costumes including the children as they strolled up and down the main street in the cool night air.We got up late on Sunday morning and after our usual cooked breakfast we caught up with the chores and got things ready for Tim’s arrival on Monday.

Monday 11th August.

The phone went first thing in the morning,it was the car hire people to say that the car had be dropped of a day early at the Aparthotel and if we wanted to we could go and collect it but it was very dirty and had no petrol! We walked up to the Aparhotel and collected the small Fiat Panda four door which was free for the day and went down to the garage in Sabinillas to top up the petrol and put it in the car wash, it ment that Brenda could come to the airport later in the evening to collect Tim.We drove over to Malaga Airport at 10-00pm and picked Tim up outside the Arrivals doors at 11-30 as he came out as you are not allowed to stop any where but we now have it down to a fine art- for any future guests!! When we got back to the house we went on the roof terrace and had a few drinks as we caught up with all the news,we ended up at 4-00pm feeling no pain as we went to bed!

Tuesday 12th August.

Breakfast is served on the roof terrace for guests as they rise, fresh fruit, orange juice and toast to start the day! The weather at the moment and for the next two months on the forecast is very hot and sunny,in the evening a warm breeze from Africa is a bonus, during the night it stays very hot and humid so we have the fans on and the window blinds open and use the air conditioning in the lounge when we need it,at the moment I am typing this not in the office but downstairs as it is very hot today. We stayed on the roof terrace and introduced Tim to Tinto de Verano which he is now in love with! For lunch we had some Gambas cooked a la plancha with salad, later in the afternoon Tim and Brenda stayed on the terrace to catch the sun then I served cocktails at six o’clock with nibbles! After a quick shower around 9-00pm we then called in to see Mano at the bar in the Aparthotel before we went down to a favourite restaurant that we use in Sabinillas for supper.Brenda had John Dory in a Lemon butter sauce and Tim and I had Sirloin steaks and frits, the steaks are marinated in a herb dressing and pan fried in butter, all washed down with a local Rioja! We sat outside by the pool and finished with Brandy for Brenda and Cuba Libre’s for us until one o’clock on the morning.

Wednesday 13th August.

After a light breakfast Tim walked down to the Aparthotel to spend the day by the pool as we had to pick up more ice and do some shopping, whilst we where out we picked up our first parking fine outside the supermarket in Sabinillas,it’s a place in the shade and everybody parks there all the time even though it is a no parking area! My phone went as we drove back up the hill,it was a person offering us work as he had seen our house-sitting advert in the paper so we arranged to go and see him across in Marbella at lunch time.We have a meeting at the end of next week with another person who wants us to look after his three bedroom apartment in the Punte Romano hotel complex,so after great difficulty and two hours later we found the villa on a very large estate just below the Man mountain behind Marbella,The job is full time and is live in,in a lodge by the villa working for a Iranian property developer. We spoke to his associate and are waiting for a phone call later today as we want more details before we commit our selfs to anything. The whole area above Marbella has the largest and finest villa’s, house’s and “ palace’s” that we have ever seen and is just mind blowing! As we got back late in the afternoon Tim came home and we went onto the terrace for some drinks as we had planned to stay in and have dinner. We had Pork cutlets cooked in a lemon butter sauce with Brenda’s now famous Leek and Cauilflower cheese bake,Ginger Carrots and Saute potatoes all washed down with a fine Faustino Rioja.

Thursday 14th August.

This morning Tim and Brenda have gone on a “ Path Finding” day out to the beach down in Sabinillas! They went to catch the village bus and find out where it stops and picks up.Brenda has just rung to say that Carlos and Ana stopped and picked them up so they still don’t know where! it goes The best plans of man and mice etc.! They have hired sun beds and umbrellas and they are being served drinks as I type this by a very nice Senorita who also brings them fresh fruit and ice pops as well as serving them lunch. The" Rilax" bar is next to the Argentian steakhouse which we go to,Tim had scrambled eggs with crispy bacon and Brenda had Thai fishcake's! Tonight we are going out for a Tapas supper in the village then we are going to see Vidal and Gissy as he has a regular gig down in the marina at Puerto De La Duquesa.Tomorrow it is Anna 60th Birthday so we have kept the day free, watch this space!
