GUADALMINA THIS MORNING,

GUADALMINA/MANILVA.

WEDNESDAY 30TH MAY 2012.

Well we have just got back this afternoon from a surprise trip to Guadalmina to look after the villa and the three dogs; Carolyn rang late on Monday night and asked us if it was possible to do the Tuesday night for them as they had urgent business over in Fuengirola – we said yes but told them that we were going over to La Linea first thing on Tuesday morning to sort out the final documents on the car and would then come over to them ASAP ! Andy came with us to the ‘Trafico ’office in La Inea ; we were the first in the queue as it opened and got the document paid and checked then had to go to another counter to receive the new document – all the details came up on the PC and it looked like we had cracked it – No ! Bureaucracy beat us yet again – we where in the Province of ‘ Cadiz ’ and we have to register it in the Province of ‘Malaga ’ So it’s back to Malaga on Thursday morning – fingers and toes crossed ! !

Last evening Brenda went for a swim in the pool at the villa as we took things easy overlooking the garden and taking in the little breeze; the pictures above show the villa and gardens in all their glory, the three dogs and the car outside the front door as we went down this morning for breakfast at “ Tricky Ricky’s ” as our treat for the week ! This evening we are having ‘ Pork Cutlets ’ with Boulangere Potatoes for dinner and are then going to catch up with the Spanish news and weather for the weekend as we are back at the villa very early on Saturday morning and will not get back home until very late on Monday/Tuesday morning ! Clive and Carolyn are going over to London to see some of celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which we will be able to watch on the large screen TV in their lounge !

Thought for the Day;

The biggest reward for a thing well done is to have done it.

THE OLYMPIC TORCH.

NORTH WALES OLYMPIC TORCH MAPS.

NORTH WALES OLYMPIC TORCH MAPS.

NORTH WALES OLYMPIC TORCH ROUTES.

MONDAY/TUESDAY 28th/29th MAY 2012.

I have been following the Olympic Torch Relay today on a BBC news page which gives you all the details and also has a live web-cam feed; this is because it is in Wales and in particular North Wales today and tomorrow, the crowds have been amazing and of course the hot sunny weather also helps ! Today it started in Aberystwyth and ended up in Bangor this evening; the route took it through Tal-y-Bont,Machynlleth,Dolgellau,Blaenau Ffestiniog,Portmadoc,Criccieth,Pwellheli,Carnarfon and Bangor. All this area I know like the back of my hand since I first went to work as a ‘Commis Chef ’in Bala when I was sixteen and of course subsequently when we have worked in Pen-y Gwryd, Beddgelert and of course Colwyn Bay.North Wales looked spectacular as the torch was taken along by the runners, it is taking 70 days with 8000 runners for the 8ooo miles ! At one stage the torch came down the Cliff Railway in ‘ Aber ’ which is a ‘Funicular ’ and is the longest in the UK taking passengers up and down a 50% gradient. Later the torch traveled on the famous ‘ Ffestiniog ’ narrow gauge heritage railway that comes down from Blaenay-Ffestiniog to the ‘ Cob ’ ( Harbor Wall ) in Portmadoc 13 miles away.

Tomorrow it is going from Beaumaris on Anglesey across the famous Menai Suspension Bridge built by Thomas Telford in 1826 and ending up in Chester. The route is going to pass through Conwy,Deganwy,Llandudno,Rhos-on-Sea,Colwyn Bay, Old Colwyn,Abergele,Kinmel Bay,Rhyl,Rhuddlan,Queensfery,Harden and into Chester ! The torch is going up Snowdon on the mountain railway with the flame in a miners lamp where it will be met by one of my mountaineering hero’s ‘ Sir Chris Bonnington ’who will take it to the top ! Later in the day it is going on a lifeboat and cable car before it passes through Old Colwyn on the main road past our dear friends Tim and Thea’s road !! To say that we know the area is some what of an understatement ! It is ending up in Chester in David and Jane’s territory so watch out !Next week I’ am going to do a picture blog about the two days in North Wales after we get back from Guadalmina on Tuesday.

PS; The pictures above show the route maps for the two days.

Thought for the Day;

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND.

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND.

MANILVA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

SUNDAY 27th MAY 2012.

This Sunday turned out to be one “ Helluva ” day ! After a little lie in we got things on the go for dinner, Lamb Cutlets baked on Boulangere Potatoes and then freshened our selves up before we set off out for a walk; it was too hot and with no breeze it gets very oppressive and close now so we have brought all the fans out,large and small rotating stacks in the bedroom and office,a small fan in the kitchen and a large one in the lounge but we don't use the Air Conditioning unit as it takes a lot of getting to used to and also costs a lot to run, so we ended up just walking up to Bar Rojas for a ‘ Paella ’ Tapas lunch and cool drink sat under the Sonbrajo,Brenda to start had a couple of small glasses of Lumy’s ‘ Gazpacho ’ made to her own recipe. We then watched the start of the Grand Prix from Monaco on the large screen in the Bar and saw the finish back at home later. We were then just about to settle down for the afternoon with Brenda going up on the roof terrace and me in the office to watch ‘ Saturday Morning Kitchen ’on the IPlayer when the phone went ; it was Mano asking us to come down to his house to crack open a bottle of Pink Champagne that he and Anna had been saving for a special day, we have not heard from them for three weeks since Anna arrived back from Tenerife and had been keeping a low profile. Last weekend Sally Ann and Dylan also arrived and are starting to plan and settle into their new life over here; when we got down to the house Carlos was also there with Fabio so the place was full of laughter with the kids running wild, we sat out on the patio over looking the view down to the Mediterranean and opened the bottle of fizz, we had taken down a bottle of chilled Cava and some Cassis so we had that to follow as we toasted to ‘ Health, Wealth and Happiness ’for the future along with the ‘ Family ’ Sally Ann had a Chicken ready to roast so Mano and Carlos popped out down to Sabinillas to a take-a-way restaurant and picked up a cooked Roast Chicken with Rice and Chips to go with the other Chicken; we then sat down around the large family table for an impromptu dinner and devoured the meal amongst much shouting and laughing – ‘ Spanish Style ’The ‘ Guerrero’s are back in business – watch this space ! My mobile rang during the meal, it was Carolyn over in Gaudalmina asking if we could look after the villa and animals for a couple of days next weekend, so we said yes and had to re-arrange out next Sunday Lunch for another day with all the family; we have saved two legs and a shoulder of local lamb for this special ‘ Welcome to the rest of your Life ’occasion ! Anna Mari Carlos’s wife picked us up later and dropped us off back at the top of our street feeling no pain.We then caught the late film a ‘ Neo-Noir Psychological Thriller ’ so it says ! It starred Halle Berry and Bruce Willis and was called “ Perfect Stranger ” and there is a big twist at the end !!

PS; We are having the Lamb Cutlet's Boulangere this evening.

PPS; I've just had a call from Carolyn to ask us if we can look after the villa on Tuesday evening as they wan't to go over to Fuengirola for the night on business so we are going over at lunchtime tomorrow after we come back from La Inea with Andy after we have hopefully registerd the car !

Thought for the Day;

Sometimes Goodbye is a second chance.

MANILVA THIS EVENING.

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY 25th/26th MAY 2012.

The forecast for the weekend and into next week is sun and more sun ; it is now getting hot and during the night it is now a lot warmer, the temperature is reaching 31/33 degs here on the coast but inland it gets a lot hotter. On Friday morning we did our usual shopping down in Sabinillas and when we got back we walked down to the market for some fresh flowers and also a sack of local potatoes that they deliver later on a scooter ! Brenda is out on the roof terrace at every chance she gets, under the Moet Chandon umbrella as it is so hot she can only take it for short while ; The pictures below came in on Facebook during the week and show Jeff and Annette over in Kuala Lumpur on their way out to a May Ball – the other pictures show David and Jane down in London at the House of Parliament promoting Cheshire Produce including some of their own Bread from their shop in Northwich. In the evening for supper Brenda had a baked Fillet of Scottish Salmon and I had Cod and Herb and Thai with Chili Crab- Cakes – thanks to ‘ Morrison’s ’ with some of the Jersey Royal Potatoes with Butter – we then watched the “ Copa Del Rey ” final from Madrid which did not kick off till 10-00pm. Barcelona won as Pep Guardiola signed off as coach with his final win !- His 14th trophy of his career. !! Pedro Rodriguez;s brace either side of Lionel Messi’s 73rd goal of the season earned Barcelona a comfortable win over Atletico Bilbao 3-0.

This morning after breakfast we went for a good walk with Cheta and ended up down at the sports complex but there is no sport this weekend as most of the leagues have finished for the summer; tonight there are some International Football matches, Spain v Serbia( 2-0 ) and England v Norway ( 1-0 ) are playing and at the moment the qualifying for the ‘ Monaco Grand Prix ’ is on. This evening we are having for dinner prime Scottish Rump Steak ( Morrison’s ) grilled ‘ Pink ’and accompanied with Sauté Onions and Mushroom’s and of course twice cooked crisp Chips in Virgin Olive Oil – my steak will be topped with a fried Egg ! Oh yes and Brenda’s finely sliced Green Beans !! We are then going to watch the “ Eurovision Song Contest ” from the Azeri capital Baku ? There are 26 countries taking part including the 76 old ‘ King of Romance ’ England’s entrant ‘ Engelbert Humperdink ’ – the last time I saw him was in a club in Liverpool back in the late sixties before he was famous ! Watch this space.Sweden won and the 'Hump ' came in next to last !

PS; This evening in the still hot sunshine it was the procession of " Romeria En Honor A La Virgen de Fatiima " ( A Pilgrimage ) which takes place at this time of the year all over Spain; Our very small one goes down in the valley to the " Hermitage San Adolfo " ( The small church ) next to the " Bano de la Hedionda " ( The Roman Baths ) The ' Faithful ' villagers follow and spend the night and all of tomorrow celebrating the festival with music,singing and prayers. The Andalucian Horses lead the parade and normally the Tableau is pulled by a Bullock but this year as you can see it's a tractor ?!The pictures are above taken just a few minutes ago !

CAMPING LA BELLA VISTA.

CAMPING LA BELLA VISTA.

CAMPING LA BELLA VISTA.

GIBRALTAR TODAY.

THURSDAY 25th MAY 2012.

This lunchtime we took Gillian across to the airport in Gibraltar; we dropped her off at the border and then doubled back to join the queue to go across the border – it was not long and we were soon in Gibraltar and stopped first to top up on petrol then went round to “ Morrison’s Supermarket ” for the first time. We ended up buying all sorts of ‘Goodies’ – Chocolates, Square Crisps, Mature Cheddar Cheese, Sausage’s, Fish Cakes, a hot Roast Chicken, Rump Steak, Jersey Royal potatoes, and various 241 offers on tinned goods ! We also bought some kitchen ware and new tea mugs and finally litre bottles of Bacardi and Bombay Sapphire Gin! The pictures below were taken from the car, which goes very well on the open road, by the assistant photographer !

The weather today is glorious with clear blue skies and hot sunshine reaching 34/35 degs. by the early afternoon; the drive along the coast road past Sotogrande is spectacular and on the way back we stopped off for a cool drink at the new ‘ Camping La Bella Vista ’to check it out; the setting on the beach front just past Sabinillas is as you can see in the pictures above proves the saying “ Location,Location,Location. ” Each pitch has electric hook-up, water and waste facilities, TV and Wi-Fi.The club house and bars and restaurant have the same views and it is English owned and run – we introduced ourselves to the owner and congratulated him on his achievement . Over six years ago when we arrived down here in Manilva just before Xmas in the Winnebago the old site on the same spot had just closed that day ! The pictures above will give you a small idea of the site.

Tonight for supper we are having Chicken and Chips ( Not in the basket ! ) and are then going to watch the football; it is the final of the ‘ Copa del Rey – The Kings Cup ’ here in Spain; it like our Cup Final and is between Barcelona and Atl.Bilbao – it is taking place in Madrid at Atl. Madrid’s ground as the pitch at Real Madrid’s ground is being relayed. It is ‘ Pep’s last game in charge of Barcelona !

PS; Just one problem,the match is tomorrow night ! It was a Spanish translation hick up on my part !!

PPS; Barcelona won 3-0 with Messi scoring one and Pedro two in the first 30 mins.!!

Thought for the Day;

Achievement is largely the product of steadily raising one’s level of aspiration and expectation.

MANILVA START OF THE WEEK.

MONDAY/TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY 21st/22nd/23rd MAY 2012.

The forecast for the week is hot and sunny and Monday started just like that; in the morning Andy called in and changed some fuses on the car as they are in a difficult place to get at, he is going to help us to get the final documents for the car next week which we think we can do in La Linea instead of a trip over to Malaga. Later in the morning we had a call from Clive over in Guadalmina to see if we were still free to house and dog sit for them, we have not been over there since the middle of last year just before his Mother had a nasty fall and they had to cancel us-she died just before Xmas. The answer was yes so watch this space – the pool awaits! We are back into reading and at the moment I’ am into the follow up book to “ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ” called “ The Girl Who Played with Fire ” by ‘ Stieg Larsson ’ In the evening we have our cocktails up on the roof terrace an take in the sunshine before it dips behind the hills at this time of the year. For supper we had flattened Breast of Chicken pan fried in foaming Lime Butter before we watched some TV.

On Tuesday morning we shot across to the hospital on the far side of Marbella as Brenda had an appointment for 10-30 which was the exact time as we walked into see the Consultant – all’s well and she does not need to go again and he gave her some prescriptions if needed in the future ! On the way back we called into see Clive and Caroline and catch up with all the news, the three dogs are fine and the two younger ones have grown – we are just going to wait for their call but it turns out that late this year they are moving back to England for a year or so as one of their daughter is not too well, they are taking all the animals with them and also Caroline’s mum is going also – one “ Helluva “ logistic nightmare ! They are hoping to rent the house for a year or so, but in the meantime we are going to help them at the villa as needed. For our dinner we had the last of the Gammon Steak topped with a fried Egg and small diced fried potatoes – delicious. Both the films starred Warren Beatty – first it was “ Bonnie and Clyde ” with Faye Dunaway from back in 1967 and then “ Shampoo ” with Julie Christie and Goldie Hawn from 1975 – both films won Oscars at the time.

Today it is hot as we went for our walk with Cheta,it seems that you are getting some hot weather over in England at the same time; The ‘ Lord Binning Pub and Kitchen ’ have the new BBQ area on the go in Kelsall outside Chester. the two pictures below show the work by the children’s play area is nearly finished and the new crane has started to lay the first of the concrete. This afternoon I ‘am going catch up with some TV programmes on the BBCIPlayer in the cool of the office before joining Brenda on the roof terrace later. For supper we are having Pan Fried flattened Turkey Breast with Rice and a Creamed Mushroom sauce after which we will settle down to watch the news and then maybe a film.The late film was a good ' Cowboy ' called " Death Hunt " 1981 and starred Charles Bronson,Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson,based in the Yukon in 1931 it is all about the hunt for Bronson ! They don't make films like this today. Tomorrow lunchtime we are taking Gillian over to the Airport in Gibraltar and then are going across the border to check out ‘ Morrison’s ’and also top up with petrol. Watch out for the pictures !

Thought for the Day;

If work were so pleasant, the rich would keep it for themselves.

MANILVA OVER THE WEEKEND.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 19th/20th MAY 2012.

On Saturday morning after our Poached Eggs on Toast we went down to the Sports Hall to watch the Rhythmic Gymnastic Competition; Before we left we got in touch on the Skype Video with Jack and Lyn in Melbourne, we had a lot of news to catch up with them, Lyn’s eldest daughter Annette Rose’s son Daniel and his partner Christine had a beautiful baby boy ‘ Kyan ’ on Friday so its Jack and Lyn’s third Great Grandchild ! Lyn has not been too well with Bronchitis and one night got up to go to the bathroom and had a nasty fall as she had a coughing fit; we then brought them up to date with all our news and the news from England from Jenny and Norah. This meant we arrived at the Gymnastics late and missed Barbara’s two girls Megan and Leah take a first and second place in their class – the pictures below show the older competitors doing their thing ! No sport in the afternoon to watch on the PC but over in the Giro d’Italia Mark Cavendish had his third stage win and is now the leading rider in the points table. In the evening after our Steak and Chips supper we watched the final of the ‘ Champions League ’between Bayern Munich and Chelsea ; it so happened that it took place in the ‘ Alianz Arena’ Bayern’s home ground; Bayern took the lead but then missed a penalty after Didier Drogba had fouled Robben; Petr Cech saved the penalty and also two more in the penalty shoot out, I read an article yesterday about how he had studied all the Bayern’s players taking penalties ! Brilliant !! Drogba scored with a bullet header to equalize before converting the crucial penalty for Chelsea’s win !!! The Germans did not take their loss well – in fact they took it very badly and un- sportsmen like ! The other strange thing was that John Terry the Chelsea Captain who did not play in the match, he was suspended, was then allowed to go up and receive the Cup – he was dressed in his full kit including shin pads and sponsor’s boots, this morning in all the English and German newspapers he has been mocked and lampooned online – it was not right ! The late film was “ Striking Distance ” from 1993 starring Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker in a crime thriller filmed on location on the ‘ Ohio ’ river in Pittsburgh USA. – It has a twist at the end !

Overnight we had heavy rain as forecast and on Sunday it was cold and overcast all day; after getting our Sunday Roast ready – Topside of Beef – we then freshened ourselves up, when I’ am in the shower I play on the PC through the speakers and sub-woofer as loud as possible the “ Musicovery Interactive Web Radio Station – you can choose from four sorts of mood for your music, I choose ‘ Energetic ’ then from eighteen Genres – I choose ‘ Blues ’and finally you select the decade – I ‘am still in the 50s ! So it’s Jimmy Reed, Memphis Slim, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley,Little Walter, and Elmore James and so on ! The office, the bathroom and the house rocks !! We then made contact on the Skype Video with Ben over in Old Colwyn to wish him “ Happy Birthday ”on his 18th ! We also spoke to Tim on the Samsung earlier and there is a possibility that he and Jo are going to come over to see us in June – watch this space- we are very excited to be having visitors ! In the afternoon after our Bacon Butties I watched on the BBC IPlayer the “ Saturday Morning – Best Bits ” – watch out for ‘ Beef Bourguignon’ on the menu in the next couple of weeks; in the meantime in the next valley to Manilva the “ World Match Play ”golf has been taking place at ‘ Finca Cortesin ’over the last four days – Northern Irelands Graeme McDowell was narrowly beaten by the Belgian player Nicolas Cossaerts in the final round. In the evening we invited our friend Gillian to join us for dinner as she is going back to the Isle of Wight on Thursday for a week to celebrate her birthday with her family and friends, we had a good old chin- wag and told her lots of tails from our past life ! The late film was called “ Extreme Measures ”from 1996 and Sarah Jessica Parker ( Again ! ) was in it along with Gene Hackman and Hue Grant – it is a medical/murder thriller. The pictures below show the crane that was finished this morning down in the Plaza Pozo Del Rey as the wind has dropped – we have discovered that they are constructing a two storey under ground car park and then the new square and children’s play area will be on top ! So defiantly watch this space !!

Thought for the Day;

It is a wise man who asks “ Why ? ” And don’t be afraid to ask “ What If ? ”
