MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY/FRIDAY 27th/28th/29th JULY 2011.

On Wednesday morning we had a little lie in after the excitement of Tuesday’s Santa Ana Festival; we then had an easy day at home doing nothing as it was hot, we walked Cheta around to the butchers in the morning to pick up some Pork Cutlets for supper before we settled down to the watch the film of the week ‘The Vikings ’They don’t make films like these nowadays!

As we got up on Thursday morning the water was off again so we had to raid the spring outside to keep us going; we have three sorts of water we use, bottled water for drinking, spring water for our tea and coffee and the council water is for washing and showering! The weather forecast for the next seven days is more sun and getting hotter, especially the nights. We are able to go out on the roof terrace for our Cocktail Hour or Two

as the sun has moved around by then, we are also at this time of the year able to play our music full blast as our neighbours are away at their Campo's as lots of people in the village are; Bonnie Raitt is currently on the play list along with 50s/60s blues ! For supper we had Eggs,Sausage,Baked Beans and chips before we watched ‘ The Tudors ’ We are up to the fifth Queen and Cromwell has just had the chop ! Over the last few nights I have been watching on TVE2, in the early hours of the morning, the ‘ Hondarribia Blues Festival’ It’s a town in the Basque region above San Sebastian, each evening it was different acts on stage starting with Johnny Winters and followed by Paul Butterfield,The Mannish Boys and loads more; the crowd are really into the music and the atmosphere is electric ! Last nights concert was a Jam Session and featured on the electric piano a 97 year old blues legend ‘ Pinetop Perkins ’and one of the finest Harmonica players I’ve ever seen ‘ Sugar Blue ’he is dressed all in black and has a leather Bandero across his chest with all his different Harmonica’s in pouches which he swaps all the time ! The backing band of Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drum’s were very good and the sound was unbelievable.

Today we went down to Sabinillas for the shopping, called into our local market for fresh flowers and stopped at the butchers for our Entrecote Steak for Saturday; tonight we are having Salmon Fillets with New Potatoes and Green Beans. We then walked up to Bar Rojas with Anna for a lunch time drink. This weekend down on the Paseo Maritimo in Sabinillas it is the ‘ International Festival ’ with stalls, food and music from all different countries as well as our local contributions from the Brass Band and the Flamenco School.The poster below won a design competition and prize.

NB; It is now only 35 days to the Vendimia Festival and counting !

DAVID AND JANE'S WEDDING TUESDAY 26th JULY 2011.

VERBENA SANTA ANA 2011.

TUESDAY 26th JULY 2011.

I was up bright and early on Tuesday morning as at 8-00am the fireworks go off to start the Santa Ana Festival; the Chi Chi Pom Band then wake the village up as they parade around all the streets in the village playing loud! As they passed our house it was a good version of ‘Tequila’ which we joined in with. Later in the morning it was the Children’s Games which take place in Calle Mar, the noise is unbelievable especially when the Tug of War is taking place! As the day goes on the village starts to fill up as all the family’s come out in all their finest Flamenco costumes to ‘Parade ’along Calle Mar on their way down to the Mass at Santa Ana Church; the atmosphere builds up as the moment comes to carry out the Santa Ana Tableau to join the procession up Calle Iglesia with the Municipal Brass Band led by Fernando marches up to Calle Mar playing very evocative music. The Town Council led by the Mayor, Antonia and Padre Manolo are in front of the Tableau followed by the entire village in their finest. All the Bars are doing a roaring business as well as the stalls including the BBQ Octopus stall! As it is dusk by then the Festival lights come on as the procession goes up and down Calle Mar; it stops every five minutes to give the Tableau bearers a rest. We had claimed our table outside Bar Rojas under the Sonbrajo for the evening; Lumy looked after us as she made especially for us the Gallo Frito for Brenda and her special large Hamburger with everything on with Frits for me! We were joined by some local friends, Gillian and her daughter who are English,Lilli who is Swedish and Antonio who is Spanish and the father of our local shopkeeper, he is a bit of a character and never stops chatting away; As the night goes on the place starts to rock as the Samba Band ‘ Kalima ’plays into the wee small hours. The pictures below will give you a small taste of the Festival .

DAVID AND JANE’S WEDDING TUESDAY 26th JULY 2011.

Yesterday afternoon the happy couple tied the knot over on the Wirral, the pictures came via Facebook ten minutes after the ceremony ! David and Jane then went to a very nice Restaurant over on the beach front at West Kirby for the Wedding Breakfast; we called them later at the restaurant and spoke to Jane to wish them all the very best for a happy life together, Jane then put her dear Mum,Nan,on to speak to us, it was her 91st birthday, the reason for the wedding taking place on the 26th ! She has been our dear friend for over forty years and still sounds the same now as she did when we first met her at the Bridge Inn in Port Sunlight all those years ago. Congratulations to David and Jane.

Thought for the Day;

We are each responsible for our own life, no other person is or even can be.

MANILVA MUSIC CONCERT SUNDAY.

SUNDAY 24th JULY 2011.

Brenda made us a surprise Smoked Bacon Butties for breakfast to start the day ahead; we ended up at Bar Rojas for a Tapas lunch, Lumy is now making Paella every Sunday and it is ready by 2-00pm so we sat outside under the Sonbrajo and enjoyed the little breeze blowing up from the coast, she had prepared small Fish Brochettes with Gambas and chunks of White Fish served with a Garlic Mayonnaise which were delicious also, When we got up earlier I had popped into the oven a local Chicken to roast, I rubbed it with lots of Lemon juice and sprinkled a little salt on it at the same time, Quickly cooked it in a hot oven with lots of basting and then finished it off to crisp the skin ! We had it cold in the evening with local New Potatoes and Garden Peas and Glazed Carrots – just what we fancied before we headed up for the last of the concerts.

MANILVA MUSIC CONCERT – SUNDAY.

Tonight’s concert featured three Choirs from Manilva; The ‘Amigos de la ASABAM’ from Sabinillas on first to get the audience going, then ‘ San Luis de Sabinillas ’ from the small church in the town and finally they kept the best till last, ‘ Santa Ana de Manilva ‘ which were introduced by Fernando, they brought the house down and even did an encore, one of the Senoras,Isobel,Lucy’s mum got a tremendous cheer when she started to dance a Fandango at the end, that is her in the final picture on the right below ! We are now taking things easy as on Tuesday we have a long day for the ‘ Santa Ana Verbena ‘ festival, the patron saint of Manilva. Watch this space for the full report and pictures !

MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND.

SATURDAY 23rd JULY 2011.

We had a little lie in on Saturday morning after the night before; Brenda’s Poached Eggs on Toast soon set us on the road to recovery! We managed a walk with Cheta before it got too hot and went down to the Pensioner’s exercise machines in the park by the Football Stadium; Brenda hit them as I looked after the dog!! On the way back we called into Bar Rojas for a cooling drink after all the exertions! When we got back to the house, after a snack lunch we retired to our separate ways, Brenda on the roof terrace reading her book, Robert Ludlam, and me watching the Tour de France. In the evening after our Steak and Chips with all the trimmings we settled down to watch a film on the TV. The pictures below which I took on Saturday mornings walk show you the new Tourist signs that have started to go up around the village, they look smart and are in Spanish and English.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2011. STAGE 19/20.

Andy Schleck took the Yellow jersey with two days to go as Pierre Roland, from France, won a captivating stage up to and on the Alpe d’Huez.But the star of the day was Alberto Contador when he attacked just after the start and did one of his famous ‘ Out of the Saddle ’climbs up the Alpe ! The Schleck brothers and Cadel Evans had to chase after him along with Samuel Sanchez, in the end he made up a little time but not enough! Saturdays Time-Trial around Grenoble proved to be pivotal in the final result as the Austalian, Cadel Evans, is all but certain to become Australia’s first Tour de France winner after a stunning ride, he took the Yellow jersey from Schleck when he made up all the time and left the brothers in his wake, Contador also had a good day but will end up fifth, but would have won the Tour if he had not crashed on the first day!Todays stage in Paris is largely ceremonial and we hope that Cavendish will win the sprint and hold on to his Green jersey.

PS; Mark Cavendish has just won today's stage in Paris,he has won the same stage for the last three years,I'ts his fifth stage win this year and he has now won twenty stages in the Tour ! He is also the first English man to win the Green jersey as the leading sprint points rider !! Oh and yes Cadel Evans won the Tour de France and has just put on the famous Yellow jersey !!! The pictures will appear above a little later.

Thought for the Day;

When you hear something.you forget it.When you see something,you remember it.But not until you actually do something will you understand it.
