PORI FINLAND SATURDAY.

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 28th/29th MAY 2011.

After our Saturday morning special of Poached Eggs “ Campo ” on toast,they have very bright yellow yolks, we had a surprise Skype Video call from Jack and Lyn over in Melbourne; it turned out that Lyn has not been very well, she had contacted Pneumonia and Pleurisy ( Very Painful ) but is now getting over them, which is good news, otherwise everything is fine although they are now in their winter over in Australia; we are getting hotter by the day and the night time temperature is not dropping below 20degs ! In the afternoon Mano and Anna dropped off the meat for the pie and we arranged to go down to theirs to watch the match later in the evening; we had our Steak and Chips early and Mano picked us up,Mano has a very large screen so we settled down to watch the European Cup between Manchester Utd. and Barcelona; they were looking after Fabio for the evening so we spoke only English to him, he repeats what you say with the accent as you speak and it is very funny to hear him speaking Manchester, Liverpool and English/Spanish ! The match was a cracker, from Wembley, as Barcelona gave them a lesson in how to play football, they are the best team in the world, even Alex Ferguson said so, they took them apart and with their passing/carousel football they mesmerized them and won 3 – 1 ! We then came back up to Bar Rojas,Carlos,Anna Mari and Fabio joined us, Carlos and Fabio in their Barcelona shirts and watched as the local supporters went crazy with car horns blowing and the fireworks going off ! A great night was had by all !

On Sunday morning after tea and toast I started on the Beef and Mushroom Pie; I make it with Onions, Carrots, Leeks,Celery,Baby Mushrooms and secret ingredients, the Diced Beef is tossed in seasoned flour and browned off before it goes in the pot to cook along with a Beef and vegetable stock, I then taste and season and add some gravy browning to finish the gravy. We watched the Grand Prix from Monaco in the afternoon which was very exciting for a change, Vettel won and Alonso was second with Button third; meanwhile the GiroD’Italia finished with a time trial around Milan, David Miller from England won it and Contador took the overall Pink jersey for the second time in his career.
In the evening I cover the Pie with an Short Cut Pastry top and glaze before putting it in the oven when the folks arrive, Brenda made some of her famous Mash that Anna had requested and also plain Cauliflower,Alcelgas and Baby Carrots and garden Peas to go with one “ Helluva ” pie ! The pictures below give you just a taste of the Pie as it came out of the oven and hit the table. For pudding we had local fresh strawberries with strawberry jelly and Vanilla Ice Cream !! We then retired up to Bar Rojas where Carlos, Anna Mari and Fabio joined us for Beers,Fanta,Bacardi and Coke and Carrajillos to round off another “ Helluva ”weekend in a hot and sunny Manilva !

Thought for the Day;

Don’t think that there are no Crocodiles because the water is calm.

MANILVA AT THE END OF THE WEEK

THURSDAY/FRIDAY 26th/27th MAY 2011.

Thursday morning was grey and overcast as forecast but it still warm 24 degs. and at night it is also getting warmer as the temperature does not drop as much; after our tea and toast we went for a walk around the village with Cheta,on the way back we came back along the old lower by-pass which is now finished with the new paving stones,kerb and seats, the new hand rail in Calle Padre Mariano is also now ready as you can see in the pictures below. The Sports City picture was taken from a newspaper cutting and a more comprehensive one will follow. In the after noon I watched the Giro D’Italia and Brenda was on the roof terrace as the sun came out; we then met up in the chill our room for cocktails and listened to Howlin Wolf, Otis Rush and Buddy Guy !For supper we had our version of a Burger Kings Wopper,fresh homemade Pork Burgers from our local butcher on Burger Baps,crisp Coz Lettuce, sliced Plum Tomatoes, raw chopped Onions, melted Gouda Cheese slice’s and Frits ! Rather nice !!

On Friday morning we popped out down to the supermarket in Sabinillas for the weekend shopping; we then called into the English Bookshop to send a birthday card in the quick post by Royal Mail and also pick up the English language newspapers. It was hot and clammy to start but as the day went on the sun came out; after unpacking we went up to Bar Rojas for our regular lunchtime drink as we take in the tranquility sat out side and read the daily Spanish newspaper, this week I managed to only get one thing wrong in the news, I thought that a politician was standing for the post of leader of PSOE but she was in fact not standing !  Mano and Anna called in early in the afternoon so we arranged to have a Beef and Mushroom Pie for supper on Sunday made with the Beefsteak from Morrison’s in Gibraltar; Brenda went out in the sun, the locals are now starting to comment on her colour ! I watched the Giro D’Italia mountain stage which went by Lake Como and then up into the Dolomites,Contador’s team covered him all the way and controlled the race from the front, as they reached the last climb to the finish he took over and saw off his rivals, as the went through a long tunnel one rider broke away, he was no threat to Contador overall so he let him go, with a kilometer to go he clicked into another gear and caught him up and with only a hundred meters to go he could have easily have won but he “ Gave ” the stage win to the breakaway rider,Tiralongo,it turned out that he was the oldest rider in the field and had been a “ Worker ” rider for another team for twelve years and had never won anything ! It was a very magnamanous move and went down very well with the Italian fans and Tiralongo went mad !
For dinner we had picked up two 16oz fresh Soles which I pan fried in Lemon Parsley Butter and garnished with local peeled Prawns, Brenda had Green vegetables,Broccoli,Beans and garden Peas and some very nice New Potatoes, “ Scrapers ” with unsalted Butter ! Delicious !! We then watched a German/American U- Boat film with Spanish sub titles !

Thought for the Day;

I trust that everything happens for a reason even when we’re not wise enough to see it.

MANILVA START OF THE WEEK.

MONDAY23rd/TUESDAY24th/WEDNESDAY 25th MAY 2011.

Once again after the excitement of the weekend we took things easy on Monday; the sun was out as we had our tea and toast to set us up for the day ahead, Anna called in early as she was out for a walk, we had not seen them over the weekend as Mano was working so we caught up with all the gossip and election news, we are planning to make a Beef and Mushroom Pie sometime this week as they had been over in Gibraltar in Morrison’s ( The biggest turnover of all their supermarkets anywhere ) and had picked up the Beef.Mano is getting ready this week as the Villa is very busy with guests over the next few months starting this weekend. Brenda is now into the hot weather routine of reading and taking in the sun up on the roof terrace in the afternoon as I find things to do on the PCs.We then have our early evening drinks in the chill out room as the sun moves around and listen to some music, at the moment I’m playing 50s/60s Blues featuring a random selection of T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and B. B.King to mention just a few, they don’t have names like them now! The book that I have just finished is by Karen Slaughter who is the new Patricia Cornwell,it lives up to its heading “ Unnerving,Unrelenting,Unputdownable ” ! In the evening after supper we watched the aftermath of the local elections on TV, as all over Spain the PP. party ( Conservative ) made huge gains.

On Tuesday morning after breakfast we went for a long walk with Cheta; it was a glorious day with clear blue skies, warm sunshine and a little breeze as we headed off up through the village to the new Las Vinas Country Park and walk. It is at the top of the village above the Sports ground complex and the walk, which is floodlit at night, takes you around in the hills behind the Football pitch through the Pine Trees before bringing you back down to the far side of the Sports Hall. The pictures below show the Paddel Tennis courts, the football pitch and all weather pitches from a different angle, Andy lives in one of the houses at the far end of the ground so he has a grandstand view when the football is on ! The pool and bar are ready to open next week after the pool is filled, it’s like an old fashioned “ Lido ” for the use of us locals !The new “ Sports City ” complex down in Sabinillas is well on the way, the 9 Million euros project with 277 underground parking places, an open air 7 a side pitch,3 Paddel courts, locker rooms, indoor swimming pool, sports pavilion, Squash court and administration as well as areas for local commerce is on budget and time for completion in 2012. In the other pictures you can see the new Social Services offices being built into an old existing building by the football ground and two more streets that have now been finished, the latest one goes down the valley to the wine groves and they are just finishing a hand rail at the top to help you get back up!
When I came to put the pictures and write the blog on Tuesday afternoon my Blog manager post page was not working, it turns out that it had been taken off-line by Google, without notification, but it came back on late on Wednesday evening, so panic over ! This week we have been keeping the suppers simple, so far, but it is hard as we enjoy are food !

Yesterday, Wednesday, we had lunchtime appointments at the surgery with our Doctor and the nurse; Brenda has a check and update on her treatment for her legs and ankle, we are waiting for the appointment for an Ultrasound scan and then another visit to the consultant over in Marbella and the nurse was going to check her broken toe and then redress it and arrange for a x-ray in Estepona,she was late after an emergency so we are going back next week, meanwhile at the same time our Doctor checked the Cyst on my middle finger which has not gone any better so he immediately arranged for me to go to the Costa Del Sol Hospital  on the 7th June for a small operation to remove it for once and all ! We Pensioners need all the help and treatment to keep us going, as well as the tablets !! Talk of the walking wounded !! We then went for another walk with Cheta as the day was the most beautiful so far this year; in the after noon I watched the Giro D’Italia,live as it went back into the mountains, the helicopter pictures and coverage fro the Italian TV station were spectacular as Contador increased his overall lead.Mano and Anna called in and joined us in the chill out room as we played the music loud, we also at the same time have our small fountain on and the sound of the running water is very therapeutic as we take in the early evening sun and discuss the problems of the world ! For dinner we had flattened Chicken Breast pan fried, with chips and peas and Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, a little bit of what you fancy does you good ! We then watched Mutiny on the Bounty( Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando ) in Spanish – the outcome is still the same !

Thought for the Day;

Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 21st/22nd  MAY 2011.

After our breakfast of Poached Eggs on toast we went for a walk with Cheta,the sun was out and as the day went on it got hotter and hotter with just a little light breeze. At lunchtime as I was checking out the e-mails Brian came online on Skype so we ended up having a long chat with him as he sat in the garden in Pori; the video connection was clear as we caught up with all their news including Lilli having her hair dyed Red ! Brian  as well as going to school full time to learn Finnish has been working on a web page for the business which reminded me that we have a web page which Jo,Tim’s daughter set up before we left, it is called sextonstravels-piczo ! I will have to spend some time on it to learn how to update and use it – a future project. In the evening we had Steak and Chips for dinner, we had bought the steak from our local butcher, as normal, it was one of the nicest pieces of Steak a la Plancha that we have had; we had Sauté Onions,Mushrooms,Tomato and local whole Green Beans washed down with a fine Rioja before we strolled up to Bar Rojas for a nightcap.

On Sunday morning we awoke to the finest day so far this year, clear blue skies, sun and no breeze so it was over 30degs by lunchtime ! We walked down to the polling station to vote for the first time in Spain; the system soon clicked in as we showed our documents and they found us on the electoral role, you then pick the party that you are voting for and place their document in an envelope and drop it into the box, no cross needed ! We then came back and picked Cheta up and walked down to Bodega Agustin for a Paella lunch, they have a fresh one made on a Sunday and it is the place at the moment for Tapas;sadly we had a not very nice, in fact a terrible Paella, it was dry, no taste, no Prawns or visible seafood, very small pieces of hard meat and the ration portion is expensive. Brenda told them as we payed,at the same time other customers, Spanish, were saying the same thing about it, we have been before and Mano and Anna go there every Sunday and it has always been very good – watch this space as we chase them up on another day when it is not so busy and we can talk to the lady cook and get the point across !
In the afternoon Brenda shot up to the roof terrace and I caught up and watched the sport; the Volvo Match play Golf from Finca Cortesin in the next valley was won by Ian Poulter when he beat Luke McDonald,the Grand Prix from Barcelona was won by Vettel who just piped Hamilton,menwhile the Giro D’Italia was in the third stage in the mountains, Contador was second twice and then third as he saw off his rivals and increased his overall lead. I then went on the live BBC Sport Text page and watched as all the final Premier league matches taking place; lots of goals and surprise’s as the relegation was decided, Everton beat Chelsea ( Big Brian over in Pori was very happy ) and then Ancelotti,the Chelsea manager was axed ! Manchester City also won ( Carlos going mad) so they were third in the league and so go into the Champions League group stage but sadly no European place next season for Liverpool ! After a light supper of Pan Fried flattened Chicken Breast and salad we walked down to the Election centre to watch the count and get the result; it was very tense and Spanish ( Loud ) as the counting took place, at one stage it was also very close but in the end Antonia’s party, the IU,won and she is back in power for another four years ! Time for the celebrations to start as you can see in the pictures below !! On the way back to the house we stopped at Bar Rojas for a nightcap to end another great weekend in Sunny Manilva.

Thought for the Day ;

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND.

FRIDAY 20th MAY 2011.

The weather is even better today so after our tea and toast we walked around to the local market with Cheta to pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables; the local Cherries are just right as is the Asparagus, we then called into the surgery to arrange the round of hospital appointments for Brenda and also to get the nurse next week to check her broken toe and rebandage it. When we got back to the house Andy called in as I have a couple of technical problems on the PCs which he soon fixed. Brenda then retired to the roof terrace and I’m reading a good book, in the early evening sunshine we had our first drink of the day in the chill out room and listened to some music; at the moment I have been using Spotify to select various artists and albums to play, I don’t bother to download, but they are starting to control what you can listen to so I have gone back to Musicovery Interactive Web Radio for our music. It is a live interactive radio station on which you can select from over twenty genres,ie Blues, going back to the fifties and up to date with the choice of four styles,ie Energetic ! At the same time I have been working on my online Radio station on Jango which will be called “ Canned Heat Radio ”
In the evening we had a fish supper, Salmon Fillets and Crab Claws and then went up to Bar Rojas as we had acquired some vouchers from the Antonia party and had the credit to use ! As we took in the late evening air the last of the election car rallies passed us a couple of times making the most of it as on Saturday they are not allowed by law to do any canvassing; we met a nice English couple from Portsmouth, David and Hillary Gillians, who have a town house at the lower end of the village, we sat and talked and ended up falling back into the house late !

Thought for the Day;

Life isn’t about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.

MANILVA MID WEEK.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY 18th/19th MAY 2011.

The weather as we got up was grey and overcast, more later, so we decided to have an at home day; Brenda caught up with the ironing and I set about making an Chicken Curry for dinner,Mano and Anna were joining us as it was Mano’s day off. It started to rain a little and the forecast for later was not good in the whole region. In the evening we had been invited up to Calle Mar for Antonia’s party,IU, meeting which turned into a bit of a do; she took over the two main bars Rojas and Nacho’s and the local councilors gave out vouchers for drinks and tapas so it soon got loud and busy in between the showers,Mano and Anna stopped for one before we walked down to the house for our Curry supper; Later we went back up to Bar Rojas for more drinks and Carajillos on the vouchers, as we walked in Antonia also sent over a round of large drinks, its called electioneering in Spain !  During the night the very severe storm that was forecast for other parts of the region hit; luckily we did not see any of it but Cordoba,Jaen,Malaga,Marbella,Puerto Banus,San Pedro,Guadalmina and Estepona got it very bad, at one point it went to Hurricane level and uprooted trees and houses and walls came down as well as cars being washed away,Finca Cortesin golf course got away with just some heavy rain, over at the villa in Guadalmina Clive and Carolyn had to bale out on Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning we set off to the Costa Del Sol Hospital on the far side of Marbella as Brenda had an appointment with a consultant to check out her legs and ankles that have been giving her a little discomfort over the last couple of months; we left with plenty of time to spare as the parking at the hospital is a nightmare; the main road in was flooded and had over two feet of brown mud on the surface so the Smart Car looked like a tank as we found a very small spot between two cars which I edged into in true Smart cat style ! We did not have to wait long as they took us in over half an hour ahead of the appoitment; the consultant was very nice and soon had Brenda sorted out, she does not need an operation but has to go for Ultrascans and follow ups to check things out and as well as keep taking the tablets and applying the ointment she has to loose 10 kilos!!  Watch this space. On the way back we did the weekend shopping, when we got back to the house the weather was  then warm and sunny and the forecast for weekend is the same; In the afternoon Brenda ended up on the roof terrace as I watched the Giro D’Ialia in Spanish on the TV, Mark Cavendish won the sprint stage and at the same time I connected up the large PC to watch the golf from Finca Cortesin in the next valley ! The course looked spectacular and on the 16th hole you could see Manilva on the hillside !The Volvo Masters has all the top golfers playing,Westwood was six up with five to play !!He is playing Ian Poulter in the next round,Rory Mcliroy is also through and will play Graham McDowell. In the evening we had cold York Ham from our local shop,sliced thin with fried local Campo Eggs and Chips !! So much for the start of the diet regime !!

PS; Alberto Contador is still leading the Giro D;Italia and now hold three of the leaders jersey's after the first of the mountain stages on Friday in the Alps ending up in Austria - Saturdays stage is a classic,starting in Lienz and finishing at Monte Zoncolan one of the highest and hardest climbs on any tour !

PPS; Poulter has just beaten Westwood  and McDowell has beaten Mcliroy !

MANILVA TODAY.

MONDAY/TUESDAY 16th/17th MAY 2011.

After the last few days excitement we had an at home day on Monday as Brenda hit the cleaning button with a vengeance; the weather is changing for the next few day with a clouds and a light breeze but the temperature’s are still hovering around 23/24degs. so it is still pleasant when we walk around the village with Cheta. The local  election is now getting into full gear; they are calling on all the houses and handing out the goody bags, over the weekend one of the parties( PA) set up in front of the Town Hall and a bit later as we were sat outside Bar Rojas with David and Jane another party (ASM) came up Calle Mar in convoy with over fifty cars blowing their horns and lights flashing waving the flags, as the lead car reached the other party stand it stopped and the main candidate, also our Doctor, who was driving entered into a lively discussion with the candidate from the other small party – it was hilarious ! On Wednesday evening Antonia’s, the Mayor’s party (IU) has a large gathering in Calle Mar, this coming Sunday is when we vote for the first time. Watch out for the report. In the evening we had a Pork Cutlet in foaming Lemon Butter sauce with vegetables and some very expensive Baby New Potatoes which we bought from the Sabinillas market on Friday.

Today we have just come off the Skype Video after speaking to Jack and Lyn in Melbourne; they are both well and are starting to plan a rather special road trip in their car and caravan; they are going to drive around Australia in an anti-clockwise direction on Route 1 – they did the same on the cruise last year and Jack has always wanted to attempt the trip;Melboune,Brisbane,Townsville,Cairns,Darwin.Perth and back ! 14 thousand ks !! Unbelievable and if it comes off it will be one “ Helluva “ trip. Meanwhile Jeff and Annette in Kuala Lumpur are going to meet up with the son( Australia ) and daughter ( Canada ) later in the year in Macau for a family get together ! Macau looks spectacular and is one of those mystical places that you read about,originaly they were going to Las Vegas but have had some visa problems, at the moment Jeff  and Annette are in Hong Kong for a long weekend – how the other half live ! Anna called at lunchtime so we had Heinz Tomato Soup with Brenda’s Melba Toast-delicious for a change and then walked up to Bar Rojas to meet Mano after he had finished work. We have just got back feeling no pain and are going for a siesta! Tonight we having a light supper of Omellete’s and watching a film on TV.

Thought for the Day;

True affluence is not needing anything.

THE BEACH HOUSE AT ELVIRIA.

SUNDAY 1st MAY 2011 THE BEACH HOUSE AT ELVIRIA.

This afternoon at the Beach House for Sunday Lunch, at the request of Tim as we had taken him there on his last visit, was one of the high lights of their visit; The surprise guest’s John and Wendy had made contact with me through Facebook and Big Brian before he left for Finland. John is from Llandudno and at one time worked for Tim and Wendy is also from North Wales so we had planned to meet them in the Don Carlos but as it was closed for a wedding party we ended up down at the Beach House a little early. As we walked in Felix, Vidal’s brother, started singing my name as a welcome, he is now the resident live show at the restaurant after moving from a Bar outside Marbella; The young staff at the Beach House are very efficient and the young lady Manager runs the floor all the time so the drinks hit us and we were soon in a happy frame of mind! We ordered just a main course as the portions are large and Tim choose an excellent full bodied Rioja and a matching White to go with the meal, Brenda and I had the Rare Argentinean Rib of Beef which comes on Creamed Leeks with lots of proper Roast Potatoes and large Yorkshire Pudding together with a selection of vegetables to please even Brenda and finger licking gravy, Tim and John had the Shank of Lamb on Mash,Thea had the Sea Bass and Wendy had a Fillet of Pork dish with Rice and a sharp sauce. All delicious with the Beef the star of the Day! As the afternoon went on and place started to buzz Felix got the crowd on the way as the music livened up, it was time for the cabaret to perform, Me!! I soon had the crowd singing and dancing as all the old favorites in Felix’s style came on and a good time was had by all!! A round of drinks appeared at our table with the Manager’s compliments and a re-booking is on the cards !! One “ Helluva ”Sunday lunch.

MANILVA SUNDAY.

SUNDAY 15th MAY 2011.

Well as you can see below David and Jane headed for the airport in Gibraltar and are now back into the swing of things in Chester; they have posted some very nice comments on Facebook and pictures of their short stay here in Sunny Manilva,thanks to you both for everything, we had a “ Helluva “ time ! Tim and Thea have also over the weekend sent us an e-mail and pictures of their stay with us which include the photos from the Beach House lunch when my assistant photographer forgot to bring the camera, I’m going to post a separate blog of the day later! After a sort on Sunday morning the washing machine has taken another bashing and is still on today; we are getting back to normal until our next visitors?! Any Requests will be reviewed quickly! We then freshened ourselves up and walked up to Bar Rojas on another warm and sunny day; we sat outside and took in the tranquility, apart from the local election cars every so often coming along the street pumping out the broadcasts ! We ordered some tapas,Albondigas in Orange sauce and Potato and Garlic Herb Cakes being the stars along with a plate of Patatas Fritas just as Mano and Anna came along and joined us. We then came back to the house and Brenda shot up to the roof terrace  to catch the sun as I finished updating the blog. In the evening we had a light Brunch, Fried Eggs and crispy Smoked Bacon, Sauté Potatoes and English Homemade Sausages along with Tea and Toast ! We then watched a film after catching up with all the sport from the weekend, Tennis, Cycling,MotoGP,Football and the local Basketball.

.

MANILVA SUNDAY MORNING.

DAY THREE SATURDAY 14TH MAY 2011.

SATURDAY 14th MAY 2011.

After the full continental breakfast David and Jane went for a walk around the village while we sorted things out in the house and freshened up; the weather was hot and sunny and later it went over the 30degs. mark for the first time this year, we decided to show them Estepona which is one of our favourite spots on the coast. We parked in the underground car park along the front and walked around the main pedestrian shopping area and window shopped! The girls bought some trinkets and scarf’s etc.and I spotted a beautiful pair of Red Leather slip on shoes that I was nor allowed to buy – another day! We ended up in Flower Square with all the Orange trees and had our first drink of the day to cool us down at it was then getting hot ! It was then time to head for the hills. again, as we had planned to go to Venta Garcia for lunch; we were recommended to it by a friend of Jane’s via Tripadvisor,we had passed it many times but is always looked like a building site ,it still does ! To call it a Venta is somewhat of an understatement, it is a very clever Restaurant from the moment you walk in; the manager, Jesus greats and seats you in an elegant styled, slate floored restaurant overlooking the hills; it has very special glasses and crockery with very comfortable large, deep wicker chairs and the two local staff hit you with the service from the start, The Menu Del Dia is only 12 euros and is on from Monday to Friday as usual so we went A La Carte;Jane had the Foie Gras,David had the Goat Black Pudding which he pronounced out of this world, Brenda had the Scallops in a Seafood Broth as you can see in the pictures below and I had the Fish and Chips for a starter which was a main course in its self; we ordered a Cordenuio Rose Cava which was full bodied and served in the fine wine glass’s went down a treat, a second bottle followed shortly ! For our main courses Jane had a Shoulder of Lamb, David a Pork Loin Dish with Chorizo and Fried Egg, Brenda had the Grilled Turbot which as you can see in the pictures was a portion and a half and I had a Large Entrecote Steak with Chips, all out of this world and looked after very watchfully by Jesus. Jane had an Assorted Platter of Sweets and I had the Crème Caramel as David and Brenda were on the Coffee’s. Whoh!! The plan was to join Mano, Anna, Carlos and Fabio down in the Manchester City supporters Beach Bar to watch them in the Cup Final against Stoke City, we didn’t make it as we retired to home for a siesta and sun bathing for Jane; Manchester won 1 – nil their first trophy for 35 years ! Mano and Carlos went wild and Mano called in later before we went out for supper to let us know that they had won!! We went up to Bar Rojas for some Tapas and Lumy made us a Small but delicious Tortilla as you can see in the last picture, I was on the the best and largest Bacardi and Coke’s in the village and the rest of the folks saw off a couple of bottles of Faustino Rosdao which they have in especially for Brenda! The night was finished on Coffee’s as David and Jane said farewell to Sunny Manilva, they are planning to return at the start of September for the Vendima Wine Festival, the climax of the year when hopefully I will become the first English Pensioner to crush the Grapes! Watch out !!! The picture above shows David and Jane heading for Gibraltar airport this morning.

DAY TWO FRIDAY THE 13 TH MAY WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY.

FRIDAY THE 13th MAY 2011 A DAY TO BE REMEMBERED.

We sat down in our breakfast room to Tea and Coffee, Toast and various conserves, Local Ham and Cheese, Chorizo and chilled Melon along with freshly made Orange Juice to set us up for the day ahead. The weather forecast was sunny later and getting warmer; we set off to show the folks our end of the Costa Del Sol starting at Sotogrande Marina, the nicest on the coast where we sat on the front overlooking the marina in the posers bar “ Ke ”for a mid morning strong Coffee. As we made our way back along the coast road we called into see Ana Mari, Carlos’s wife, who has started work in a new job in the last few days at a complex Bar /Restaurante by the side of the N340, local wine was soon flowing along with the Bacardi and Coke to help us on our travels. Next we stopped at El Castillo de la Duquesa to show them the old fishing port, the Castle where there was formally a Roman Villa and the sea front views over to Africa on a clear Day. We then called into El Puerto de la Duquesa where the council has spent a lot of money, lately to improve the overall state of roads etc. After a quick look around we next hit San Luis de Sabinillas and stopped at the Friday Market on the front, we had earlier shown them around the village and our Friday Market down by the sports ground; It was time to head up into the hills for a spot of lunch in our favorite workers Venta in Casares for the Menu del Dia; we had been unsuccessful on the way in finding a Venta that some friends had recommended on “ Tripadvisor ” More about this later ! We got on a window table overlooking the gorge just before the workers hit it, Salad hits the table as you sit down, for starters we had Potaje, Paella and Gazpacho and to follow two sorts of Pork Loin, Chicken a la Plancha and Entrecote steak all served with fresh crisp fried sliced potatoes and mixed vegetables. The local wine is crisp and dry and a friendly Bacardi and coke also helped us on our way after a sweet of Egg Flan and whipped cream finished with the house Carajillo’s ! As we came down the steep and twisty road back to the coast I spotted the sign for the “ Hotel Hermitage ” which turns off up at steep and twisty unmade track to the hotel, we could have never been able to make it in the Smart Car, it is only passable in Four by Fours; it is over 3ks. and on the way you pass lots of secluded grand villas on the hillsides, in the next two weeks they are closing the road to resurface it complety after years of negotiations with all the villa owners, the hotel is the hidden gem on the Costa de Sol. We were welcomed by the restaurant manager Alberto who made us most welcome as we settled on the terrace overlooking the pool and Hotel cottages in the grounds and down to the coast and the Mediterrnean.He recommended for the girls a very floral crisp local white, a beautiful sharp Rose for David and I had my usual Bacardi and Coke served in a large Brandy Balloon glass. After studying the menu of the " Celima " restaurant which has a very good Menu del Dia as well as the a la carte the Chef came over and introduced himself, Rod Williams comes from Preston and has trained with all the great Chefs back in England just like David so they got on like a house on fire ! We then requested a Cheeseboard which came along as you can see in the pictures below with an excellent selection and garnished with a savoury Chutney and Quince Jelly.Alberto then offered us a drink on the house so Jane and I had a local Licqueur on the rocks and Brenda had a spectacular Brandy warmed over a glass of hot water and severed in a novel fashion with a paper napkin ! We shall return ! On the way back down we spotted the Venta that we had been looking for and called in to check it out – we soon arranged to go back on Saturday for lunch which will be revealed on the next blog;We tried to call into the Golf Club on the Finca Cortesin course but the security would not let us in so we stopped at a Chirningito on the beach front at the end of Sabinillas overlooking the bay for a early evening cocktail ! We headed back up to Manilva and our house for a little sun worshipping on the roof terrace for Jane and a siesta for the rest of us; later in the evening we ended up at Bar Rojas for supper, sat outside on a balmy evening we soon had a bottle of Brenda’s regular white on ice, the local Rose for David and the largest Bacardi and Coke of the day; sadly Lumy did not have any John Dory so we had instead Swordfish Steaks with salad and fresh Patatas Fritas along with fried Eggs and Garlic for me ! Coffee Solo, Hot Chocolate and Carajillos’s finished off one of the most memorable days down here on the Costa del Sol. A Friday the 13th not to be forgotten in a long time !!

Thought for the Day;

Quality means doing it right when no one is looking.
