THE HANGING GATE AT WEAVERHAM.

GIBRALTAR THURSDAY MORNING.

MANILVA THE SISTERS VISIT.

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY 25th/26th/27th SEPTEMBER 2012.

Tuesday turned out to be our last sunny day down here in Manilva as the tail of the tropical storm ‘ Nadine ’is due to catch us later in the week; after getting ourselves smartened up we set off to “ The Brasserie ” at Casares Golf Club for our pre-lunch cocktails,it is our favorite spot for drinks when we are on the way out. The pictures below show the Brasserie at its best as I was caught on camera – not often ! We then headed up the valley past the luxurious Finca Cortesin Golf and Country Club where we have been invited next Tuesday to a ‘ VIP ’ deVere group cocktail party ! Venta Garcia was looking at it’s best as we were welcomed by Jesus, we had the prime table in the window as you can see in the pictures below; The meal, as usual was excellent, Brenda had a Smoked Salmon salad to start, Norah had the Chicken and Vegetable Broth, Jenny had a Pasta salad and I had the ‘ House Chicken Croquettes ’which come with some crisp chips ! Brenda for her main course had the Confit of Duck Leg,Norah had a baby Sole, Jenny had the blade of Roast Lamb and I had the baby Suckling Pig with Lyonnaise potatoes – To drink with the meal we had a bottle of the ‘ Pinot Noir Rose Cava Brut ’ Crème Caramel’s to follow along with complimentary Brandies ended another fine meal at the Venta ! It was siesta time when we returned to the house an in the evening we just watched some TV and ‘ Snacked Out ’

Overnight the rain storms hit us, our first real rain in over a year ! We slowed down going out so I decided to have a cooked breakfast,Eggs,Smoked Back English Bacon, English Pork Sausages, Button Mushrooms, and Sauté Potatoes along with plenty of buttered toast and tea set us up for the day ahead ! We then set off, in the afternoon, in the hire car for a drive along the coast,Estepona market had been rained off so we showed the sister’s the famous ‘Tikitano ’ beach restaurant, went up to the ‘Gastronomic Capital of the Costa del Sol ’ Benahavis for a quick tour ready for another day, stopped at ‘ Tricky Ricky’s for tea and then went though Puerto Banus onto the ‘ Golden Mile ’ of Marbella.The next port of call was the shopping mall ‘ La Cancelda ’
for mainly window shopping ! We then picked Gillian up from the bus station in Marbella after her flight back from the UK,she had had an horrific trip going over with Friends in their car, Santander and Bilbao ferries on strike, a dash across France to Calais and severe storms crossing the English Channel !! After dropping her off up in the village we shot down to ‘ Marlow’s for a early fish supper – Haddock, Chips and Mushy Peas before the girls packed when we got back to the house for an early start next morning.

We went over to Gibraltar for the sister’s flight back to Liverpool on Easy Jet, it turns out that they are not carrying on with the Liverpool flights from the end of October ! Brenda walked across the border with Norah and Jenny to find out the old airport had closed,finally,and they where on the first flight out from the new airport ! See the picture above. They arrived safely home only half an hour late – we are already looking forward to their next visit next year !! We did the shopping on our way home and for supper we had Calves Liver again with all the trimmings before we settled down to watch the classic film of the week – “ High Noon ”with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly.

Thought for the Day;

Sadness flies away on the wings of time.

MONDAY 24th SEPTEMBER 2012   THE BIRTHDAY BOY REACHES 67 – UNDAMAGED –JUST.

The weather is still fine but in the middle of the week the tail end of ‘Tropical Storm Nadine ’is forecast to hit us overnight on Tuesday and last until Saturday; Monday was another fine day as we had a little lie in before breakfast, the sisters in the morning like their Weetabix with Bananas to start them for the day! As the day went on the messages from all over the world came in on Facebook from family, friends old and new and ex- staff; I also spoke online on Facebook to friends as they saw that I was online – you have to think and type quickly ! Tim phoned on the Skype Video so we had a nice long chat and caught up with all their news – the latest was that they had settled Ben into his university on Sunday, Edge Hill in Ormskirk outside Liverpool in their new car a VWGTCC ! It looks rather special !! Then Brian and Lilli called on Viber from Finland, they had not got through on the mobile so called on the landline – my mobile had gone funny over the weekend and finally had switched it’s self off on Monday Morning ?! After our call Brian checked out the Samsung Galaxy and sent me details via Facebook about how to sort the problem out – it seems that it is quite a common fault in the programme – bingo, with in a few minutes as was back online and up to date on the Mobile ! Thanks Big Brian! Sadly we where not able to get in touch via the Skype Video in the morning to Jack and Lyn in Australia as we found later on Facebook from the family that they had gone away ,up country to Mildura ! I also had lots of good old fashioned cards including two from Brenda, she could not fine one that said everything that she wanted to say !! Arh !! In the evening we cracked open a very nice bottle “  Codorniu Cava Rose ” as you can see in the picture below; there was a picture of me but I am still having problems with new ‘ Google Blog Publishing ’ page and have lost it ,at the moment, Andy is coming around on Friday morning to help me sort it out and see if we can figure out how to publish the blog with paragraphs and spaces ! As you can see it’ s still not working !! He is also going to sort out a major problem that I have with the small PC after Mano called in on Monday morning to use my printer; his PC was not working and he had no ink in his printer after his daughter Sally Ann had been using it ! He was in a rush and would not be patient with my system to load and the outcome is that now nothing is working ! After he had printed his documents !! Watch this space !!! For dinner we had Pan-fried flattened breast of Chicken in foaming Lemon Butter  with Basmati Rice and a creamed Mushroom sauce. A nice day with Brenda, Norah and Jenny down here in Sunny Manilva.

Thought for the Day;

Life isn’t about finding yourself; it is about creating yourself.

MANILVA SUNDAY EVENING.

MANILVA SUNDAY EVENING.

MANILVA SUNDAY ROAST.

SUNDAY 23rd/SEPTEMBER 2012. Another hot and very sunny day down here in Sunny Manilva – 30 degs. and rising; As it is Sunday the sisters are going down to the large market on the ‘ Feria ’ground down in the valley below the village – I dropped them down in the morning and then picked them up later; meanwhile back here in the kitchens we were busy getting the Sunday Roast on the go, Roast Turkey ( Half the bird from last Xmas ) which we had dropped into the deep freeze,uncooked.Brenda’s vegetables were Cauliflower and Broccoli Mornay,Baby Brussels Sprouts with Smoked Bacon sippets,Glazed Carrot Batons and Garden Peas and Parsley Baby New Potatoes ! I made two kinds of stuffing Sage and Onion and fresh Chestnut ( the girls picked them up, hot ) and of course Goose Fat Roast Potatoes and finger licking Gravy !! The pictures above show the three sister’s about to tuck in and later as they attacked the Trifle; we made the Trifles late on Saturday night with Madrelaine Sponge, Strawberry Jam, Peaches and Grapes all soaked in local Sherry, then Brenda topped it with her Strawberry Jelly and finished them off in the morning with the Custard and whipped Cream and decorated them with fresh local Strawberries and Wallnuts ! An early Christmas Day lunch ! When the girls got back they were shattered after being in the sun for three hours so they went for a siesta as we went up to Bar Rojas for our Paella lunch. In the afternoon I had a sports day, down on the main TV I had the Grand Prix on from Singapore,sadly Hamilton engine conked out! Upstairs on one PC I was following the World Men’s Road Race cycling from Holland as also sadly Cavendish, Wiggins and Froome all retired from exhaustion after trying to help their team mate Tiernan Locke win on the hilly course, the Belgium Philippe Gilbert won; and finally on the other PC I was watching the football from England, in particular Liverpool v Manchester Utd. – Liverpool lost 1-2,here in Spain Barcelona won 2-0 against Granada but the Real Madrid v Rayo Vallecona game was abandoned when the lights where sabotaged in bizarre circumstances ! After dinner we caught the late film “ Vantage Point ”from 2008 with John Hurt, Dennis Quiad and Forest Whitaker in a political action thriller before hitting the sheets to get ready for my birthday on Monday ! PS; We had Cheta here on her first ‘ Sleep Over ’ as Isobel was staying at her daughters over night as she had an appointment at the surgery in the morning which is just around the corner; we brought her bed and comfort blanket up and she was no trouble, in fact she was as good as gold – she was picked up this morning. Thought for the Day; Act enthusiastic and you will be enthusiastic. … .

THE OLD SESSIONS HOUSE PUB AND KITCHEN AT KNUTSFORD,

MANLVA THE " SISTERS VISIT,"

THURSDAY/FRIDAY/SATURDAY 20h/21st/22nd/ SEPTEMBER 2012. On Thursday morning we went across to Gibraltar to pick the girls up, it turned out to be one “ Helluva ” day as you will read ! Brenda went across as usual to meet the girls at customs and check that the flight was on time, she soon found out that there was a major problem at Gibraltar Airport control, the main radar system was not working, just and no flights could land due to the weather conditions ! Norah and Jenny’s plane was just coming into land and had to abort and go to land at Malaga !! It meant that they would have to be brought over to Gibraltar by bus and would not be there until 2-0pm approx. So we came back over to Manilva and on the way up to the village we called into to see Mano as on Tuesday evening he ended up in the Costa Del Sol hospital, unconscious after watching Real Madrid beat Manchester City 3-2 !! He was with Carlos and some other friends down in Sabinillas watching the game in a sports bar, as he was leaving he was knocked unconscious and can’t remember anything ! He is badly shaken up and bruised and cut all down the side on which he fell ! Enquiries are being made !! He will be off work for a short time and this is why Anna did not come with us to the airport as planned. When we returned to La Linea to collect the girls again at 2-00pm the news was not good, the airport authorities could not tell Brenda much and Jenny was texting us with updates; the buses had not arrived at Malaga and they had no more news. We went into the town centre and had some Tapas at “ La Bodeguiya ”which Brian had introduced us to the week before, we were going to take the sister’s there when they arrived ! We then went back to the border and waited, and waited and waited ! The girls had texted us to say that the bus had left, with them not on it, no room and that they were being sent by taxi instead !! They eventually arrived, six hours later at 5-00pm !!! The ‘ Easy Jet ’people at Malaga airport had totally lost the plot ! We came back to the house and made them their favourite cup of tea to get them back into the land of the living! Their last one was at 4-00am at the airport in Liverpool !! In the evening after freshening up we went out to the fish and chip shop past Sabinillas for supper; we all had the Haddock which was very tasty and the batter is to die for before we stopped at Puerto Duquesa for a night cap of coffee and Brandies to end a “ Helluva “ Day down here on the Costa Del Sol ! Friday morning after breakfast, the girl’s favourite is Weetabix,which we had got in especially for them, we shot across to Estepona; I first called into our bank and the went up to the car hypermarket to pick up some oil for the car, it’s a lot cheaper then the petrol station’s. We then parked and walked into the town for a coffee before the sister’s hit the shops; they bought bits and pieces as we went along the main street, Brenda found a nice top in the ‘ Cheap and Chic ’ shop and I bought another shirt in my favourite shop ‘ Baileys ’ Brenda also picked up her watch that had been in for repair before we ended up in the ‘ Flower Square ’ for lunch at our favourite restaurant, Brenda had the baby fried Sole again and we all had the pan fried breast of Chicken with chip and salad – sat under the umbrella as the sun came out and it warmed up. We came back to the house for a siesta and then had our early evening cocktails up on the roof terrace; we walked up to Bar Rojas for supper sat under the Sonbrajo in the cool night air, Brenda and Norah had a ‘Tortilla ’freshly made for them by Lumy with salad, Jenny fancied the Hamburger Special with frits, she finished it all and I had Pork Fillet a la Plancha with fried egg and frits – a little bit of what you fancy does you good ! We then retired to the house and I caught a late film with ‘ Arnie ! ’ This morning after breakfast I dropped the girls down in Puerto Duquesa as they were going to walk back to Sabinillas along the beach front, Brenda even had her new Bikini on ! Meanwhile I called into the English butchers and picked up some very nice Rib-Eye steaks for dinner tonight before coming back to the house to catch up with Blog,as you can see ! The hire car people picked up the car, we have it next week for two days on Wednesday and Thursday so we are going to have a day out in Marbella on the Wednesday and later pick our friend up Gillian from the bus station as she is returning from England, then it’s the airport at Gibraltar on Thursday morning, fingers crossed that everything is back to normal – watch this space ! Thought for the Day; Family is the most effective form of government. …

MANILVA START OF THE WEEK.

MONDAY/TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY 17th/18th/19th/ SEPTEMBER 2012. .. On Monday morning I was up bright and early as I had an appointment with our doctor at the surgery; I was renewing my prescriptions for another year, as he says if everything is OK- keep taking the tablets! I also checked that my next six month appointment with the consultant in January is all arranged at the Costa Del Sol Hospital over in Marbella to check out the old Prostrate! Brenda is coming into the home strait getting ready for the arrival of her sisters on Thursday – the menus and agenda are planned and the house cleaning is nearly finished – their welcome picture in the bedroom is in place in the frame ! In the evening for supper we had Pork Cutlets with some more of the Boulangere Potatoes before settling down to catch up with news on TVE. .. Tuesday morning was a little overast, as forecast, as we for a change caught the bus down to Sabinillas to do a little retail shopping; we called into our bank, stopped at the English bookshop to order the Box-Set of ‘ 50 Shades of Grey ’for my birthday present – Brenda is also looking forward to reading the trilogy later ! At the same time we picked up some books to read this week, we then called into ‘Super Sol ’for some English essentials,i.e.Sarsons Vinegar, Heinz Tomato Ketchup,etc.and from their excellent cake counter two Strawberry Tarts for out afternoon tea ! The next stop was at the stationery shop for some files before we had a coffee in the square and caught the bus back up to the village. In the afternoon I watched the UCI Road Race World Championship from Holland – it was the ladies Time Trial – sadly Emma Pooley only finished fourth. .. For supper we had Calves Liver that Brenda had picked up from our lady butcher as our regular butcher did not have any, she had sliced it very thin as requested and I floured and pan fried it, pink, in foaming butter, with it we had crisp Smoked Bacon, English pork Sausages (Well cooked) assorted vegetables and the last of the Boulangere Potatoes! It was delicious, melted in the mouth and was very tasty – we were drooling by the end! Later we watched a rather gory new version of ‘Spartacus ’which is on at the moment in a new TV series. .. Today we are having an at home day and taking things easy; the hire car is being dropped off in the morning, we taking Anna over to the border as she wants to into Gibraltar for the day, Brenda will cross over and meet the sisters and we are then going to stop in La Linea for a coffee and Tapas. PS; The hire car people called at lunchtime and said could we help them ? They wanted to pick us up in the village and take us over via Marbella to pick up the car in Cancelada ! The weather was very good and it gave us a nice drive and an extra half day ! One other bonus was that Cheta was able to come with us,she loves going out in a car,in fact she would not stay in the back with Brenda,she had to come and sit and stand on my knee in the front ! .. Thought for the Day; .. I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday. … ….

MANILVA OVER THE WEEKEND.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 15th/16th/ SEPTEMBER 2012.

The forecast for the weekend’s weather was hot and sunny reaching 33 degs by Sunday; it is carrying on into next week but by Thursday it is sadly going a little cooler for the arrival on Norah and Jenny! We had a nice day taking things easy on Saturday and at lunchtime we went up to Bar Rojas for a cool drink sat under the Sonbrajo; in the afternoon Brenda retired to the roof terrace to read and I caught up with football over in England on the large PC,Brian had fixed the sports channel last week, sadly both Liverpool and Manchester City could only draw their games 1-1 – later in the ‘ Liga ’here in Spain Barcelona had a good win at Getafe 4-1 but Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Seville and are now 10th in the ‘Liga ’Maurinho is not looking happy and Ronaldo is in one of his ‘ Ronaldo Sulks ’ Barcelona are top and in second place is our local ‘ Liga ’team Malaga ! On Tuesday it is the visit of Manchester City to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions league – Real Madrid are not playing well and it is just the right time for City to get a result ! Come on the ‘ Blues ’ – Carlos and Mano are starting to get excited ! In the evening for supper we had rare ‘ Steak a la Plancha ’with Green Beans and crisp Chips before settling down to watch the TV.

Over the weekend we have had some good films to watch; “ Space Cowboys ” from 2000 was produced, directed and starred Clint Eastwood with James Garner, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones all playing themselves as four ex-retired old test pilots sent into space on a mission to save the world ! Watch it to find out if they did !! Then we watched “ Firewall ”starring Harrison Ford in a 2006 thriller with the bad guy played by Paul Bettany, it gets rather exciting at the end and finally “ The Generals Daughter ” from 1999 which is a murder mystery based in an army camp and starring John Travolta,Madelaine Stowe and James Cromwell.

On Sunday morning after making the ‘ Boulangere ’potatoes we got ourselves ready slowly and went up to Bar Rojas for our ‘ Paella ’lunch; the folks from Manchester that we met on Saturday came along as we had recommended the ‘Paella ’to them, we should be on commission at Bar Rojas ! So we all sat down under the Sonbrajo in the lunchtime hot sunshine – 33 degs. Later we took another picture of the ‘ Bamford’s and Haslorm’s on the crossing as you can see in the picture below, I forgot to give them our details as they were leaving so as they can contact us next year when they are threatening to return ! i.e.; malcolm.sexton@googlemail.com and our phone numbers – mobile 628529975 and home 952890548 ! Just as they were going Mano and Anna came along and joined us as Mano had finished work early so we caught up with their news at the same time. In the evening we had our local Lamb Cutlets roasted on the potatoes for supper, they are rather small and not as meaty as ours but we make up for it with quantity – they are very tasty and the ‘ Boulangere ’Potatoes where to die for – even if a do say so myself !

Finally over the weekend we have been following the opening of ‘ TOSH ’over in Knutsford with interest, the place is all ready bouncing and as we spoke to Paul last evening as we were on the roof terrace – their best seller at the moment is the “ Cheshire Cheese Sausage ” that is pictured above ! There is a story and history about it that I will find out about when I next talk to David !

PS; “ The Tour of Britain ” which finished on Sunday after eight stages was won by ‘Jonathan Tieman-Locke ’who is the first British ride to win it in the last 19 years. Cavendish saved his energies at the end as next week it is the World Championships in Holland where he is the favourite to retain the ‘ Rainbow Jersey ’that he won last year but he still managed to win the final stage - his third of the Tour !

Thought or the Day;

Some people dream of success; while others wake up and work hard at it.

MANILVA LAST EVENING.

MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND

MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND

THURSDAY/FRIDAY 13th/14th SEPTEMBER 2012.

We are now catching up with the chores around the house; Brenda is in full cleaning mode so the washing machine has not been off since the folks left, it is very good drying weather up on the terrace and the ironing board and iron have taken a bashing, in fact we had to buy a new iron this morning as the old one gave up the ghost last night! The sisters are arriving next Thursday for a week, flying into Gibraltar so I have arranged for the hire car as we can’t fit them and all the luggage in the Fiesta ! We are starting to make plans as it is my Birthday on the Monday while they are here ! The pictures below show the ‘Old Sessions House Pub and Kitchen ’in Knutsford on it’s opening day on Wednesday, we are also back to going for walks around the village with Cheta so you can see that the work on the new underground car park is shooting up, I climbed between the cement delivery trucks to get the pictures as the fence was down ! Brian rang us on Viber ( no cost ) on Thursday lunchtime to tell us that they were home safely and he has just sent us a Facebook message to say that they have looked at the Blog and found out what they have been up to !! And seen the pictures !!! I have also been catching up with the ‘Tour of Britian,Mark Cavendish has won two back to back stages, come second in another and crashed on the first stage when in sight of the finish ! Watch this space. Last night,Thursday,for supper we had good old Cold Ham, Egg and Chips then watched the late classic film “ Giant ”from 1956 ! with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and of course James Dean. I then watched the latest version of “ The Alamo ” from 2004 with Dennis Quaid,Billy Bob Thornton and Jason Patric – you can’t beat the classic one with directed by and starring John Wayne back in 1960 with Richard Widmark and Laurence Harvey !

This morning , Friday, we went as usual to do the shopping down in Sabinillas,before we left I logged onto the BBC ONE Web Page to watch and listen to the final ‘ Chris Moyle’s Breakfast Show ’ – ‘ The Goodbye Show ’ It was broadcast live with camera’s in the studio so you could see the whole crew and put their voices to the faces – strange ! You could also see how the studio works to present the show, when we returned from the shopping I was able to catch the last ten minutes !! An end of end of an era.

As we were going for our walk I was just about to drop the rubbish in the street bins when a gentleman approached me from outside Bar Rojas and asked ‘ Are you Malcolm ?! ’ It turned out that he had been following the Blog from Day One ,seven years ago on the 1st September !! He found it by chance when he typed in ‘ Estepona ’ and has been a ‘ Fan ’ever since ! Graham and Josie Bamford and their friends Neil and Anna Haslorm from Manchester are staying down in an apartment by Puerto Duquesa and had come up to the village to look around ,they spotted me by chance ! The picture below show’s them. minus one wife who was back down in the port, with Brenda and Cheta on the now famous “ Abbey Road ” picture opportunity !! So nice to meet them and find out that there are more people out there following us ! Tonight for supper we are having Baby Soles grilled in Lemon Butter with Prawns and new Potatoes.

Thought for the Day;

If you give appreciation to people, you win their goodwill. But more important than that, practicing the philosophy has made a different person of me.

BRIAN AND LILLI STILL HERE IN SUNNY MANILVA DAY 16 !

Well it is the folks last day here in sunny Manilva; Brian and Lilli shot down to the beach in Sabinillas to take in their last rays of sunshine before returning to the winter in Finland ! They then went on a farewell tour of all the bars between there and here saying goodbye to all their friends, ending up in Bar Rojas for a late lunch with Andy and Maria ( Day Off ) It was then siesta time before we all went out for their last evening in Manilva; their very good friends Jesus and Pili had asked us down to their ‘ Campo ’at the top of the village on the side of the valley, as you can see in the picture below, for dinner with them; it is a working farm with fruit and vegetables and lots of animals which they live off, we joined them at the kitchen table for a memorable meal, we started with their own Goats Cheese, made on Monday, served on slices of Tomato from the field below ! Pili then brought to the table from the oven ‘ Chibo ’- Roast Baby Goat ( Killed last week ) with mixed Vegetables; for the dessert we had Pili’s famous ‘ Fig Cake ’very tasty and rich and moist. Shots of different flavours followed to end our meal with them as you can see in the picture below.The ‘Abbey Road ’picture was taken by a passing stranger before I could pose properly !

WEDNESDAY MORNING 4-00AM 12th SEPTEMBER 2012.

We hit the road to Malaga Airport early this morning to catch their flight to Turku in Finland which is on the coast below Pori; we have just received a ‘ Viber’text message to say that they have arrived safely home ! See the picture below taken at the airport ! We are missing them ! Their toothbrushes are still in the bathroom so we are waiting to see them come down, late, to go out for breakfast up at Bar Rojas ! Thanks for a “ Helluva ”three weeks – how time flies when you are having fun !!

Thought for the Day;

It is the friends you can call up at 4-00am that matter !
