MANILVA - GIRONA ON MONDAY

MONDAY 29th/ APRIL 2013

Well the dog stayed with us until the late afternoon when Isobel came home; the weather over the weekend has been sunny but cool and on Monday the wind picked up and as forecast it was cold. Rain was forecast but did not happen and tomorrow it is more of the same before the rest of the week gets back to normal; in the rest of Spain they have had severe rain storms and new heavy snow falls in all the Northern regions and on all the mountains, Tim and Thea are having a few days away in Majorca, I hope they have packed their macks, wellies and umbrellas as it is rather damp at the moment to say the least!

Mano called in later in the afternoon and picked up the paper’s, he has not been working over the weekend and Anna has had some family over from Manchester so her and Sally Ann have been busy entertaining; it was an at home day as we caught up ( Brenda!) with the house work and washing.

Over in England in the evening at the Guildhall in London it was the announcements of the ‘Worlds 50 Best Restaurants’ by the “ Restaurant Magazine”  ‘El Cellar De Can Roca’ in Girona above Barcelona was named the best, this is the first year that the restaurant has held the title, though it has been on the list for eight years; the restaurant is helmed by three brothers,Josep,Jordi and Joan Roca – see the pictures above.Better pictures and menu details will follow!

In the evening for supper we had cold Pork with all the leftovers, we always prepare more just for this reason and then settled down to watch the Monday night classic movie called “ Turbulence ” from 1997 – a thriller in the ‘Air’ as Ray Liotta goes mad as only he can and Lauren Holly has to deal with him and land the 747 at Los Angeles Airport ! Check to see if she did!!

PS; The pictures below show the work update’s on Tuesday morning around the village.

Thoughts for the Day;

Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude.   Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer. Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

MANILVA THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

MANILVA ON SUNDAY

SUNDAY 28th/ APRIL 2013.

We had a nice long lie in on Sunday morning before we got the day on the go; after our tea and toast we started on our roast, sadly not Rib of Beef as we can only dream of it as the price is too restrictive at the moment due to the Euro v the Pound! Another day – say la vie!! We roasted a nice Loin of Pork and I made a savory Herb Stuffing and the finger coating Pan-Gravy later; Brenda’s vegetables were Cauliflower and Broccoli florets with my now famous ‘Three’ Cheese sauce, Cabbage with Alselgas,sweet Baby Carrots and Garden Peas for me! We had some nice minted New Potatoes and I roasted in Goose fat crisp half sliced baby Roast Potatoes. We have not heard from Mano and Anna and they have not called in to pick up their papers so it was just the two old aged pensioners sat down to dinner!

Whilst I’ am on about food we were very jealous this week when David and Jane with two friends went and stayed at the “Gleneagles” Hotel and dined at the eponymous restaurant ‘Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles’ as part of David’s 50th birthday celebrations; it has two ‘Michelin’ stars, has been voted as one of the world’s top ten best hotel restaurants and he was voted AA Chef’s Chef of the Year; Home Smoked Scottish Lobster with warm Lime and Herb Butter and Roast Fillet of Turbot, Seaweed Butter, Asparagus and Clam Veloute being two of his signature dishes that they tried! See the pictures above; proper food, no spheres, foams, chemistry or molecular cooking as David commented served by charming, professional and knowledgeable staff. Sublime!!

At lunchtime we went for a late walk with the dog and stopped at Bar Rojas for a drink; we then had my Mint and Pea Frittata back at our house after showing Lumy the pictures, for her approval, as it is her recipe! And ‘Yes’ she did !! We then caught up with all the sport and then watched the afternoon film classic “ The Yards ”from 2000 which is set in the commuter rail yards in New York City, hence the title; Mark Wahlberg, the award winning Joaquin Phoenix,Charlize Theron who I did not recognize with short hair, James Caan and Faye Dunaway in the true story based on a corruption scandal of the 80s.

In the early evening Brenda picked the dog up with her bed as she was staying with us for the night as Isobel was not well and was staying at her daughters and going to see the doctor in the morning;she is no problem and we love having her to stay!

After our roast dinner for two sat at our fully laid table,as usual we settled down to watch the late film on TVE1; “ The Inside Man ”from 2006 also based in New York, it is a bank robbery with a difference! A ‘Spike Lee’ film starring Denzel Washington as the cop, Clive Owen as the robber, William Defoe miscast as a uniformed police chief, Christopher Plummer as the bank owner with a past and the ever watchable Jodie Foster as a mysterious  ‘Fixer’ Watch it to find out !!

Thoughts for the Day; in pictures for a change !

MANILVA THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

SUNDAY ROAST WE WISH

SUNDAY SNACK LUNCH IN MANILVA

MANILVA THIS WEEKEND

SATURDAY 27th/ APRIL 2013

It was a rather overcast day as we got up and did not clear up much as the day went on; I watched ‘Saturday Morning Kitchen’and Brenda pottered about the house cleaning and scrubbing anything she could find! I kept out of the way in the office!!

In the afternoon I watched the early kick-off in England, Manchester City v West Ham, not very exciting – City won 2-0 with two good goals. Later Everton won 1-0 against Fulham. Meanwhile on TVE1 and TDP it was tennis,Nadel won and is in the final today in Barcelona v a Spanish player and at the same time Sharapova won and is in the final today against Li Na in Stuttgart.

PS; Nadel won the Barcelona Open for the 8th time and Sharapova won a 'Porsche'in Germany.

Here in Spain in the ‘ La Liga’ Real Madrid won 1-2 at Atl.Madrid but Barcelona could only manage a draw at Atl.Bilbao 2-2 The match of the day was over in England with the late kick-off at Newcastle v Liverpool – Liverpool won 0-6 and played some sublime football – why can’t they do it all the time? I have also been following the cycling as it starts to get interesting; over in Switzerland in the ‘Tour of Romandie’which finishes on Sunday Chris Froome is leading and should win.

PS; Froome had an easy win in Switzerland.

In the evening for supper we had ‘Steak a la Plancha’ with Sautéed Onions and Mushrooms, sliced Green Beans,crisp Chips and mine topped with a fried Egg! The late film that we had not seen before was “ Jennifer 8 ” from 1992 with Andy Garcia,Uma Thurman and John Malkovich – a murder mystery with a twist – Garcia is the cop,Uma is a blind music teacher and Malkovich is the FBI -  don’t miss the end and no Malkovich didn’t do it!!

Thoughts for the Day;

A person does not seek luck; luck seeks the person.  Luck is what you have left over after you give 100 percent.

MANILVA AT THE START OF THE WEEKEND

THURSDAY 25th/ FRIDAY 26th/ APRIL 2013.

As you can see on Thursday morning after breakfast we went for a long walk around the village, my first since Monday; hopefully I’ am ‘Back’ to normal after the tablets and the intense nursing from the ‘In- House’ nursing sister!! In the early afternoon Tim called on the Skype video to see how I was, thanks Tim ! I still could have done with his ‘ Masseuse’ help on his plinth, Brenda says that she wouldn’t mind also having a quick rub-down!

For supper we had English Pork sausages with grilled Smoked Bacon,Tomato,fried Campo Eggs and crisp chips before we settled down to watch the 1ST Leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-final between Basle and Chelsea on’Telecinco’ – Basle 1-2 Chelsea after Chelsea scored in the 94th minute!

This morning we went down to Sabinillas for the shopping, called into the bank, picked up the papers and exchanged some books in the English bookshop and then went into the Chinese supermarket for a new(Cheap) clock for the office wall; we then went for our walk with the dog down to the local market by the Congress centre to pick up some flowers and a plant for our next door neighbour for a thank you for all the fruit and vegetables she passes in from her Campo, for instance yesterday fresh large Broad Beans and this morning very fresh baby new Garden Peas! Over the weekend I’ am going to make a small Pea Frittata for lunch !! Watch this space.

While we were out we discovered that the council have started yet another project behind the Congress centre, it looks like it is going to be a small park; as we walked back up through the center of the village we could smell the Tarmac being laid in the area of Wall street; see the picture above, they have also started to clear the small square above Wall street and are going to finish it off at the same time!

Yesterday afternoon the Mayor and the council as part of the cultural week celebrations unveiled a new plaque  in Calle Aurora in Sabinillas; the plaque was originally erected in 1981 and portrays the text of a poem by the eminent poet Rafael Alberti – see the picture above from Gary at the The Resident newspaper;

Tonight for supper we are having deep-fried Hake fillets in Beer Batter with Mushy Peas( Tinned!) and square cut chips with lots of Lemon juice! Yummy ! The'Cruz Campo' batter is so light and tasty - an old 'Gary Rhodes' recipe!  We will then find a film to watch after channel hopping.

Thoughts for the Day;

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge speaks but wisdom listens.  Things do not change, we change.
