MANILVA FREE CONCERT.THURSDAY EVENING.

THURSDAY 29TH JULY 2010.

On yet another balmy evening as we attended the last of the free summer concerts arranged by the council and Fernando Antintolo Bueno, the director of the School of Music; the largest audience so far watched and listened to the Piano-Jazz concert, the first half was Fransisco Martin Gambero “ Paco ”the excellent pianist from last week with the band performing a classical set on a special electric piano starting with Chopin, some Spanish classical numbers and finishing with a George Gershwin Medley. The audience sat enthralled and very quiet as they appreciated the talent of Paco.

For the second half he was joined on stage by Fernando Antinolo Torres on drums and the voice of Isabel Pastor Gonzalez,the electric piano also had a pedal base system which Paco used to lay down a base line; Isabel who has a easy listening voice sang in English and Spanish, The Spanish version of The Girl From Ipanema was captivating and her Besame Mucho was dedicated to a member of the audience, the guest singer Nacho Valiente performed a earthy Spanish song with great feeling. Fernando then gave another virtuoso performance on the clarinet of the classic Take Five before Isabel ended with one of her personal favorites,the Billy Joel number,Just The Way you Are. The whole audience rose to their feet to applaud another excellent concert and called for an encore; What a Wonderful World was just right to finish off the set and about summed up the evening. We will miss our Thursday evenings out and look forward to future concerts arranged by the School of Music and especially Fernando’s contribution.

MANILVA SANTA ANA.

MONDAY 26TH JULY 2010

One “ Helluva ” Day that started at 8-00am and finished at 3-00am this morning !

The Charanga Band and fireworks starts the day with a bang; Santa Ana is the patron saint of Manilva and this is the next to biggest festival and carnival of the year, we met Mano and Anna up at Bar Rojas for drinks and tapas and were joined by some town councilor’s and the head of Manilva Radio/TV under the canopy of the Sanbrajo in the hot lunchtime sun; then it’s siesta time.

In the evening we had supper at Bar Rojas, Carlos,Ana Mari and Fabio joined us as the village got packed before the processions begin; they all dress up in their best dress’s and finery and parade up and down Calle Mar which is set up with stalls and later a very large bouncy castle; as the Mass ends in Santa Ana church the procession makes it way up to the main street lead by the Town Band with the Mayor and Councillor’,then the Statue of Santa Ana covered in flowers is carried on the shoulder’s of the apostolic’s,this year for the first time Paco,Lumy’s youngest son was one of them. The ladies of the Town Choir follow the tableau and also all the church congregation as they parade up and down Calle Mar in the late evening.

By now the village is bouncing and all the bars do a roaring trade in Tapas and drink; the six main one’s along Calle Mar all set up extra outside Bars and more tables and chairs all along the street as the atmosphere warms up,Manolo’s Sanbrajo was a big hit with the locals, The stage at the top of the street is set up in front of the old Town Hall with a large space for dancing as the bands start up; the two band’s perform until 3-00am in the morning and the crowds soon join in from the very young to the old; the music is loud and you can’t stop moving to the rhythms, the band in the pictures is a ten piece combo with male and female dancers and singers and are very good.

As we were jigging away Brian came along after work and joined us,Lilli is home in Finland for a long weekend, we ended up back at Bar Rojas at 2-30 this morning for the last drink along with some friends and regulars of Manolo’s and Lumy to end one “ Helluva ” day to remember. The pictures below give you a little idea of the evening but not the sounds. smells and atmosphere !!

MANILVA LIFE.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY 24TH/25TH JULY 2010.

On Saturday we had a day at home to catch up with the chores, it was also very hot and so we took things easy for the rest of the day.

First thing on Sunday morning Mano rang to say to come and join them up at Bar Rojas for a coffee; it was Mano’s birthday, late fifties, so he was in a celebration mood; Anna,Carlos and Fabio were also with him and they had picked up some fresh “ Churros ” from the small pastry shop at the top of the village to have with our Tea and Coffee, usually you have them with hot Chocolate, you dip the fried batter rings in sugar and then dip them !

Next we went down to the front at Sabinillas to have a couple of drinks and to start we had Bacon Butties and the full English Breakfast to help sustain us for the rest of day ! By then the sun was very hot and the beach was full, all the locals put up their sun umbrellas and form a line along the beach front as far as you can see just above the water line; there is only a very small tide in the Mediterranean, which we watched from the shade of Gary’s Beach Bar !

On the way back we ended up back in Bar Rojas and then went for a siesta; in the evening Calle Mar was closed so the children’s games could tale place and also they erect bouncy castles in the street;

Thought for the Day;

The hardest challenge is to be yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you somebody else.

.

MANILVA VERBENA SANTA ANA.

One and a half hour's later the band came back down the main street after going around every narrow street in the village ! They ended up in the Town Hall foyer playing as loud as they could and then marched off out of the village past Bar Rojas. !!

SUNDAY 25TH JULY 2010.

Today’s final stage 20 of the Tour de France was from Longjumeau to the Champs-Elysees in Paris; yesterday the stage was around the vine fields of Bordeaux to Pauillac over 52km and was a time-trial and was won by the time-trial specialist Fabian Cancellara,Contador made time on Shelck and retained the overall lead for today’s final stage which is a bit like a procession as they ride into Paris.

The Manic Manxman,Mark Cavendish the “ Manx Missile ” won the sprint, his fifth stage win of this year’s tour and his 15th in total; only 12 men have won more! So Alberto Contador is the winner, for the third time and Andy Schleck was second, again with Russian Denis Menchov third.

NB; The Spaniard won by 39secs.the same time amount of time Schelck lost in the incident that seems to have become known as “ Chain-Gate ” !?

TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 17/18.

THURSDAY 22ND JULY 2010.

Alberto Contador clung to the wheel of Andy Schleck up the final major climb of this year’s Tour de France to remain on course to retain his crown. Shcleck attacked with 10km left on the stage from Pau as they where going up the Tourmalet leaving everybody behind except for Contador;the duo caught the seven-man breakaway group with ease to leave a straight fight between them on the grueling final 8km.Schleck repeatedly looked behind him through the mist to assess the state of Contador,who initially refused to take up the running, they exchanged glances and words as they climbed higher and higher in a frenzy of wheels and madcap spectators; the Spaniard suddenly launched an attack with 4km to go but Schleck responded superbly, giving his rival a long stare when he drew alongside him again.

With the mountain’s finally behind us we are back on the flat of south west France with the 198km stage from Selles-de-Bearn to Bordeaux today, one for the sprinters.

Mark Cavendish stormed to his fourth stage win of this year's Tour de France and his 14th in all on today's 18th stage;there were no changes at the top with Contador retaining his lead.
