OVERCAST BUT WARM IN SUNNY MANILVA ON TUESDAY;

TUESDAY 13th/ MAY 2014.

This morning we had a new sound that got us up, it turns out that one of our neighbors around the corner has a blocked drain in her house so a specialist firm from Estepona is in the street with their van and equipment making as much noise as possible!

The weather today is at the moment a little overcast but it’s still warm and the sunshine will break through later, yesterday afternoon Brenda was up on the roof terrace with the sun block on her chest but still managed to get a little color across the top of it!

After breakfast we had our menu planning conference for the week; tonight it’s seared ‘Calf’s Liver’ with Smoked Bacon, English Pork Sausages, sautéed Mushrooms, griddled Onion ring, Green Beans and the last of the ‘Boulangere’ potatoes! Then tomorrow it’s ‘Chicken Curry with Basmati Rice, Thursday is a find something in the fridge day before Friday’s ‘Fish Night’ – Saturday will be our regular ‘Steak a la Plancha’ and then on Sunday it’s going to be ‘Turley Breast Escalope’s’ with Basmati rice and a rich Mushroom sauce only if we don’t go out at lunchtime!

On our walk later with the dog I will call into the butchers for a boned Leg & Thigh of Chicken to go into tomorrows Curry, I use Chicken Breast’s in a 4 pack from ‘Mercadona’ that cost just 5 euros and we use the small fillets from them for salads; the breast’s are also OK for the flattened Chicken but we also use the butcher’s as well as his breast’s are bigger and tastier! The ‘Lamb Cutlet’s that we use are from the supermarket and come in a large bag for about 5 euros, Spanish cutlet’s are thin and some are like small steaks, we save some for another day to use in a Mixed Grill – tonight’s Calf’s Liver is the cheapest thing that we buy, only 2 euros and some of it goes away for the Mixed Grill a well.

The Fillet of Pork is from the supermarket and comes ready prepared at 6 euros; from it we get two meals, Medalillons &Schnitzels!! When we roast a Chicken, portioned not sliced we pick one up from the supermarket for 5 euros, the butchers are slightly large and cost 7/8 euros – we get four meals then two cold the next day as well as chicken salad, the Loin of Pork (sliced) for roasting is from the supermarket and gives us the same result as the Chicken for 5 euros also! NB’ A very good Carving Knife & Fork is essential!

Our Saturday night ‘Steak a la Plancha’ cost’s just 4 euros and as with everything I ‘Butcher’ it ‘French-cut’ and so make another snack/salad from it – as with all our meats! When I making the ‘Braised Steak’( Two meals again!) it’s from our butchers and I can have it in slice’s or diced for a stew – cost about 6 euros depending on the amount; the three sorts of Burgers from him are 1 euro each, while the ‘Brochette’ marinated cubes of Pork are only 3 euros.

Now for this weekend’s Roast Leg & Shoulder of Lamb – It’s a special treat for high days and holidays as it’s the most expensive thing that we buy besides the ‘Fore-Rib of Beef’ at Christmas! It costs on average about 25/30 euros! – but it is worth it!!- just!!! So I think that that’s enough ‘Home Economics’ for today!

Last nights film on TVE2 was a delightful English comedy “Saving Grace” from 2000 with the marvelous Brenda Blethyn,filmed mainly in Boscastle in Cornwall with Craig Ferguson,Martin Clunes,Bill Bailey,Diane Quick,Phyllinda Law,Ken Campbell and the great Leslie Phillips ( Ding- Dong!) It makes you smile and laugh !!
