MANILVA START OF THE WEEKEND.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY 16th/ 17th DECEMBER 2011.

We were up bright and early as we went down to Sabinillas to do the shopping and various messages; at the bus stop Anna Mari, Carlos’s wife, picked us up on her way to her new job in Estepona, we then exchanged some Coca Cola cans at Supersol as we had picked up the wrong ones on Tuesday, next we went down to the Lottery shop and bought one ticket for the Xmas Lottery – ‘ El Gordo ’ – The Big One ! It costs 20 euros per ticket but it is the biggest lottery in the world and you can win with just one ticket this year – 12 million ! We also have a half share in one with Mano and Anna which we got from Bar Rojas, it is the number that the whole village is using and increase’s your chance, whole villages become millionaires over night !! We then did a bit more retail shopping before walking back through Sabinillas to the English bookshop for the papers, then we went along the road to Mercadona for our main shopping. We needed a taxi to get us back up to the house; after unpacking we picked Cheta up and walked down to the market in the village to get some flowers and another Poinsettia, our fourth, and at the same time I ordered another bag of the local Potatoes for next Friday, they are excellent for Chipping,Roasting,Bakeing and Boiling ! On the way back we stopped at the butchers and picked up some Steak for our Saturday night supper.

When we got back I was in the office checking out the WWW. when a message came in from David and Jane over in Chester; it was a invitation to their wedding celebration ‘ Bash ’ at the ‘ Lord Binning ’ in Kelsall at the start of January, sadly we can’t make it but we will have one or two glasses with them here anyway – thanks and we know that you will have a “ Helluva “ night ! While I was typing the message to them I had logged on to the BBC RADIO I Player on the other PC and we were listening to David on BBC Radio Manchester earlier in the morning, he is a radio star as well as a TV star, next week he is on BBC2 on Tuesday evening on the ‘ Hairy Bikers ’ Xmas show ! The radio programme comes from the new BBC centre on Salford Quays and he was on the ‘ Heather Stott show talking about dieting, his past kitchen training with Marco Pier White and of course he got a good plug in for the Lord Binning ! The pictures above shows the ‘ Lord Binning ’last evening after a surprise snow fall and also ‘ Upstairs ’at the Binning ready for a Xmas party.

For supper we had picked up some fish from the market, it was called ‘ Rodaballo ’and was a whole white flat fish, I had the dark skin taken off and then left it whole; I baked it in the oven with lots of Lemon Juice and Butter and we then took the fillets off, which were firm and succulent, we had Garden Peas and Chips and on the side I put some fresh peeled local Prawns as a garnish, it was delicious and tasted as good as Turbot, the Queen of fish, it was Turbot !! Last week I watched a Rick Stein programme when he poached a whole Turbot in a specially made kettle, after checking out on Google I realized that it was the real McCoy ! What fooled us was the price, it was not expensive. Whoh ! We will try and get some more next week.

This morning after breakfast we went for a long walk with Cheta around the village; the weather down here on the Costa del Sol is sunny and blue skies with a stiff breeze, the rest of Spain is still being hit by the Atlantic gales and storms; as we got down to the sports complex by the football ground there was a small Xmas market in front of the Manilva Congress centre with stalls of local cheese, chorizo and of course sweet cakes, we then noticed that there was something happening inside, to say that it was a surprise is an exaggeration, it was full of ‘ Senora’s ’from all over the province sat at tables with their own knitting/crochet/ fine lace making stands in front of them, it was a competition ! The pictures above show you what I am talking about and we think it is called a ‘ Bolillo ’!! We then stopped at the sports pavilion and there was a game of Basket Ball taking place between Manilva and Marbella, in the blue, it turned out that Marbella are top of the league and are the best team on the coast, the score as we left was 72-11 for them ! Oh dear !

As I have been typing this I have on the other PC my own live radio station on ‘ Jango ’playing a selection of Xmas Classics, through the speakers, loud, as we sing along ! Next on the sports channel it is all the Saturday football games from England; then I will try and watch this mornings ‘ Saturday Morning Kitchen ’with guest chefs,Micheal Roux Snr. and Brain Turner. Tonight for dinner it is our Saturday night special of Steak and Chips and then a film on the TV.

PS; Everton just managed a draw against Norwich, this is for Brian over in Pori who is watching Lilli Flamenco dancing ! Brian Turner did a braised Duck with Peas and Lettuce,English style, and Michael Roux did a whole roasted Pineapple with Coconut Ice Cream !

NB; A picture of Lilli in her Flamenco costume has just come in from Finland - see above !
