We had a nice long lie in this morning after
a week of early starts, the village is very quiet, as the weather is not good, yesterday
lunchtime the rain stopped and it stayed dry for the rest of the day, this
morning we had a heavy shower, it’s cold & windy and the sky is dark &
overcast, after freshening up, Brenda is washing/shampooing her hair later, as
Brenda was on the breakfast rota I had her famous ‘ Campo’ Poached Eggs on
Toast, Scrambled for her, with mugs of hot tea.
It looks like the rain is with us for the
weekend and at the start of next week, the breeze is stiffing up, keeping it a
lot colder, down to 14/15 degs, overnight as low as 6 degs! Next week as the
breeze drops it’s going a little warmer, by mid-week, hovering in the high ‘
teens’ – partly cloudy with some sunshine at times, next weekend we could have
more of the ‘ wet-stuff’ – just in time , sadly, for the start of the ‘ Semana
Santa ‘ religious celebrations starting on ‘ Palm Sunday’ watch this space.
On the sports front this weekend; over in
the ‘Premiere League’ today Everton welcome Arsenal and last night Liverpool
beat Southampton 1-3, later today at Wembley, it’s the first semi-final of the ‘FA
Cup’ as Manchester City play Brighton & Hove Albion, over here in ‘ La Liga’
Real Madrid welcome lowly Eiber and the ‘ Match of the Day’ is Barcelona at
home to Athletico Madrid.
Later this afternoon we will of course be
watching the ‘ Grand National ‘ from Aintree, as ‘Tiger Roll’ aims to emulate ‘
Red Rum’ and win back-to-back Grand Nationals!
Tomorrow afternoon it’s the “ The Boat Race
“ – first held in 1829 – as Oxford take on Cambridge, for the fourth time in
the history of the event, the men’s, women’s and both reserves’ races will be
held on the ‘Tideway’ - on the same day.
As we are watching the ‘ Grand National ‘
later this afternoon I will be thinking of all the my memories that it brings
back, I was born just a couple of miles away, went to Primary School, just along
the road and as a child played on the course, being chased by ‘Mrs Topham’- the
owner, later I had my first bike rides into the country across the famous ‘ Melling Road, with my Dad, Tommy
Sexton! I was as a small child taken into the ‘ Adelphi Hotel’ in Liverpool, on
‘ Grand National Saturday’ to see my uncle, Horace, who was the ‘Head Florist’
of the famous hotel for nearly 50 years, this was the first time a got the
taste of hotel life, as I went through the restaurant & kitchens!
Later in life as I became the Manager of
the ‘ Stork Hotel’ in Queens Square, in the early 60s, in the centre of
Liverpool I had many memorable ‘Grand National’ weekends, once we had the
winning owner staying at the hotel, on another occasion I had to go down to the
‘Landing Stage’ at the Pier Head, on the Saturday night, to chase a famous Irish actor, as he caught
the last boat back to Ireland, as he had not paid his bill at the hotel, I came
off the boat as they were taking the ‘ Gang Plank’ up! Some of the ‘ tales’ I can’t talk about! “ Happy Days – Happy Memories “
For our supper this evening we are having a
large ‘Grilled Rib of Beef’ – on the bone, cooked on a very hot griddle-plate ‘
Med-Rare’ – the left to rest, before taking it off the bone and slicing it into
fingers ‘ French’ style, garnished with seared Asparagus Spears & Button Mushrooms
and accompanied with a classic ‘ Bearnaise ‘ sauce, with whole baby ‘ French’ Green
Beans and of course twice-cooked ‘ Frits’
On Sunday evening we have arranged a ‘
Skype’ video call with Sandra & Bill, over in Everett, Ontario, Canada, to
catch up with all their news, they of course read all ours on the Blog!
This evening after supper we will be
channel hopping again to find something to watch.
Thoughts for the Day; See above.
