A DAMP AND OVERCAST SUNNY MANILVA ON SUNDAY;
Another
little lie in this morning as it’s still grey, damp and overcast in sunny
Manilva this morning; we then had for our breakfast Poached Eggs on Toast
(Brenda Special!) We are then having a nice leisurely morning getting ourselves
ready; we are going over early this afternoon to Claus and Doreen’s villa down
on the coast road before Estepona, it’s on the hillside and has spectacular
views across the Mediterranean and down to Gibraltar and Africa – on a fine day! We are looking
forward to our day out – all the pictures later!
As you can see above Claus and Doreen,s villa is one 'Helluva' villa! Over the past ten years they have totally re-built the old property inside and out over the two floors;the top level is there,s and the level below has the indoor/wave pool and Jaccuzi with a large guest apartment with kitchen. The cellar below is large enough for a bowling ally! The two terraces are huge and there is a large water feature overlooking the re-laid garden! No pictures for security reasons !!
They made us very welcome as they showed us around; to start with we had a 'Carpaccio' of Cured meat with toasted Pine nuts and a fine chilled Cava; for the main course Claus had prepared a large joint of 'Pot-Roasted Beef' on a bed of Shallots with a rich finger-licking salsa on the side, whole Green savory Beans and a large dish of one of his speciality's " Kartoffelkloesse!" - Potato Dumplings. We had taken a very special bottle that we have been saving for a special day " Savigny-Les-Beaune" 2004 'Maison Champy' One of our favorite Burgundy's.
For dessert we had individual Strawberry tarts with a Chocolate cup of Advocaat ! 'Lecker' as Doreen would say! The white wine and Bacardi and Cokes flowed ! Very many thanks to the folks for a wonderful meal and great company - now a even bigger thank you to Claus who has offered to take us to the hospital tomorrow evening as just before we came out Andy called to say that he can't make it as his shifts have been changed at the hotel.Claus is picking us up and then bringing us back later after I've been in for the Biopsy.

Some more
sports results today later as Spurs welcome Everton and Barcelona are in Seville , last night Real Madrid won 4-2.Sadly Everton lost 1-0 - sorry Big Bri! Barcelona won 1-4 and are back at the top of 'La Liga' on goal difference(5) with Real and Atl.Madrid as well as Barcelona all on the same points !!!
Last night
we lost most of the main Spanish channels as I storm hit us during the evening
so we ended up watching a Moroccan TV Station that we have, there are two main
channels, one in French and the other in Moroccan! A film was just starting and
it was in English with Moroccan sub-titles, so no problem there then!
“ Celine” from
2008 – the unauthorized life story of Celine Dion! It stars Christine Ghani as
Celine,Jodelle Ferland( Younger) and Peter MacNeill as her manager and
eventually husband – she was born into a large musical family in Canada , the youngest of 14! Watch the
movie to find out what happened!
PS; This morning we found a blog-message from last year that we had missed, sorry to Di and Andy who are friends of Pat and Norman,Pat is a very old friend of Brenda's from their school days and was a bridesmaid at their wedding! Thanks for the details from Di and Andy and please make contact when you are next down here!
PPS; Pat and Norman how are you - please contact us at malcolm.sexton@googlemail.com !!

OVERCAST AND COOL IN SUNNY MANILVA ON SATURDAY;
SATURDAY 8th/
FEBRUARY 2014.
We had a
nice long lie in this morning after some early starts during the week; the
forecast today is not as good as we are getting once again the tail end of the
Atlantic storms hitting the UK . We can’t complain as the rest of Spain especially along the Atlantic coast
has been hit very badly with lots of damage just like in England during this week.
After our
tea, toast and Banana I’ am back up in the office to try and get on-line to
watch BBC TV1s ‘Saturday Morning Kitchen’ live, in the last couple of days the
new satellite has come on-line and so most of Spain has now lost all BBC TV and
at any moment ITV as well on their normal TV channels on their TVs!
My system
using ‘Film On’ on the PCs is one of the ways that you are supposed to be able
to still get them, it was forecast nearly a year ago that this was going to
happen, it has worked up to last week when I couldn’t manage to get on-line,
last night I just about was able to watch ‘New Tricks’ only to find out that it
was not the new series but a repeat! So this morning I’ve tried again but at
the moment with no luck! Watch this space. At this moment as I’ am typing the
Blog I’ am also watching ‘SMK!’ – just!!
Today it’s
a big sports day over here and in England with Football and Rugby taking the main lead; last nights
opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi was spectacular to say the least! The
‘Match of the Day’ is Liverpool v Arsenal followed by Norwich V Manchester
City, Everton are at Spurs on Sunday; over here Real Madrid welcome Villarreal
and Barcelona are at Seville.
At the moment after 20 mins Liverpool are WINNING 4-0 !!!! Final score 5-1 ! City could only draw 0-0 whilst Chelsea won 3-0 and go top of the Premier League!

In the ‘Six
Nations Rugby’ the big game of the day is up at Murrayfield in the ‘Calcutta
Cup’ when Scotland welcome England . David has gone up to watch the
game but Jane has a bad back so is not with him, the pitch is waterlogged and
so it going to be ‘Mud-bath!’ Meanwhile Wales go to Dublin to play Ireland .
Ireland beat Wales 26 -3 with 'Sexton!' scoring 4 penalties; England won 0-20 on a pitch that David says 'You would not plant Turnips on!!'

This
evening we are going to the ‘Inauguration’ opening service at ‘ Iglesia Santa Ana ’ church after the refurbishment
when the entire village will be there. Some pictures later.See above with the Bishop of Malaga, the new local priest and 'Padre Manolo' the, much loved previous priest and the village dignitary's.
Afterwards
for supper we are having our regular Saturday night ‘Steak a la Plancha’ with
sautéed Mushrooms and Onions, finely sliced Green Beans, twice cooked chips and
‘Béarnaise’ sauce on the side – mine topped with a soft-fried Campo Egg and
Brenda’s with deep-fried Garlic buds!
Last night
we found a good film to watch “ 12 Rounds” from 2009 – it’s an all-action
American thriller that takes place in New Orleans ; it stars John Cena as the
cop,Aidan Gillen as the ‘Baddie’ the love interest is played by Ashly Scott –
lots of action and mayhem!

A LOVELY WARM DAY IN SUNNY MANILVA AT THE START OF THE WEEKEND;
FRIDAY 7th/
FEBRUARY 2014.
Up before
the birds this morning and after our tea and toast we shot around to the
surgery to make an appointment at the small hospital in Estepona for my Chest
X-Ray – result – next Wednesday morning early! We then carried on down to
Sabinillas to the bank first, then the supermarket and lastly picked up the
papers.
After
unpacking back at our house I shot around to the butchers for our Saturday
night ‘Steak a la Plancha’ I then made a new batch of my now famous
‘Minestrone’ soup which we have at lunchtime when it’s not so warm outside with
an old classic from the past that Brenda makes ‘Melba Toast’ !
At lunchtime we went for a short walk with the dog and called in at the Vets as she seemed a littler off colour, they are checking her tablets and medication - watch this space.
This
evening for Friday ‘Fish ‘night we are having guess what?! - ‘Goujons of Hake
Fillet’ – we picked up some fresh breadcrumbs from the bakery this morning,
with Mushy Peas and small diced twice-cooked ‘Chips’- I now keep a jar of my homemade Tartar sauce
in the fridge and just freshen it up when needed! Lots of Lemon wedges are also
called for.
Last night
seared Calves Liver with all the trimmings was delicious, we all enjoyed it,
Mano especially loves it- he’s tidying the house as Anna is back from her
latest ‘Jolly’ over in England on Sunday evening!
We then watched "La Voz - The Voice' - Kids edition; it was rather good and very moving, some of the children had terrific voices and stage presence!

After
supper this evening we will watch the news, sport and weather forecast for the
weekend before catching a film later; today is the official opening ceremony of
the Winter Olympics from a rather at the moment ‘Warm and no snow!’ Sochi on the Black sea coast – the costliest winter games
ever at £30 bn! We will watch it later this afternoon on the coverage on the
Spanish ‘TDP’ channel.

CRISP AND DRY IN A HOT SUNNY MANILVA ON THURSDAY;
THURSDAY 6th/
FEBRUARY 2014.
A little
lie in this morning after the early starts as we were out and about down on the
‘Costa Del Sol’ Yesterday despite the rain Estepona was looking very good, the
council have done a marvelous job in all the streets of the old part of the
town; here in sunny Manilva our council have also re-laid all the streets and
of courses the other week placed all the plants pots around the village but the
Estepona council have taken it to another level.
Their
street ‘Planters’ are so much better, they have all sorts of more exotic plants
and flowers, all the lamp posts have double pots around the top and finally
they have covered all the streets in hanging wall pots in different colors in
each street,Blue,Green,Brown,Terracota etc. !! I’ve started to chase all our
local councilors to make more of a show here in sunny Manilva – watch this
space! We are going over to Estepona on a fine day and will take some pictures
for the Blog.
This
morning after tea and toast I shot around to the chemists then went down to the
butchers for something for tonight’s supper; we are having ‘Pan- Seared Calves
Liver’ with sautéed Onions, crisp Smokey Bacon and English Pork sausages (also
cooked crisp!) with a fry-up of the leftover vegetables and thick-sliced Baked
Potatoes dry-sautéed, on the side some of my now famous Tomato salsa that I
have made a fresh batch of this morning ready also to make some of my famous
‘Minestrone’ soup tomorrow morning!Mano is joining us for supper this evening after finishing work, its his favourite meal !
Tonight
after supper its Spanish soap night then a film; the weather at the moment is
picking up,today its another lovely day here in sunny Manilva,Brenda took the
dog around to the vets to get her toe nails cut and then have a shampoo( Chispa
not Brenda!)See the picture above of Chispa after having the full-works! We are then going for a walk around the village ,its already 20
degs this morning – the Town clock is working so watch out for the pictures
later. As you can see the clock is on time in the new small Plaza, they have planted a tall Palm tree and the lamp post has gone up!

A RAINY AND WET DAY IN SUNNY MANILVA ON WEDNESDAY;
WEDNESDAY 5th/
FEBRUARY 2014.
Well I
suppose it had to happen sometime – it’s raining – for the first time in eight
month’s (Xmas day storm excepted!)!! So we wrapped up in the wet-proofs and set
off out after our tea and toast; first stop was Estepona so as I could go to my
Barber’s ‘Manuel’ for the full works,shampoo.cut. shave and massage! Brenda
called into the jewelers next door and got her watch checked and a new battery.
To start we went to our favorite breakfast café in ‘Calla Real’ for a coffee(
very good!) and tostado served very quickly by the proficient regular waitress.
Brenda then
set off into the pedestrian-only shopping street to go to the large cosmetic
shop for some essentials including a good face-cream; I then met up with her
just as she spotted the sale in the new dress bag and shoe shop opposite, she
came out with two pairs of boots on the ‘241’ offers!! Black ankle boots and a
very nice pair of knee-high brown Swede boots – and cheap as well !!
It was then
time to carry on to the hospital past Marbella for my lunchtime appointment
with the ‘Dermatology’ consultant – alls fine and no more visits except he
spotted as he was going through my records that I have not had a Chest X-Ray
over here so I’ am getting the surgery to arrange a visit to Estepona Hospital
so as my doctor can give me the once over! On the way out I checked on my
appointment on Monday to find out where ‘Admissions’ is ! Andy is taking us
across as it’s his day off – they tell you not to drive afterwards.
I’ve just
posted on my Facebook page the new ‘Facebook Movie’ that came on-line
yesterday, it’s very good, everybody is using it, it’s set to music and chooses
the pictures from your page as well as showing the details – very impressed and
easy and quick to set up!
Tonight for
supper we are having ‘Baked English-cut Pork Chops’ with glazed Fuji Apple
slices, Cabbage with Acelgas, crushed Carrots with Baby Turnips and cooked
local Potatoes diced and tossed in foaming Butter with diced Red & Yellow
Peppers,Leek,Onions then added which I have just cooked off ready. The Smoked
Trout that Claus brought on Sunday were delicious - ‘ Lecker?!’ as Doreen would
say in German – with Horseradish sauce!
Last nights
film was “ The Natural” from 1984 with Robert Redford in the main role of an
aging baseball player with a history, Glen Close and Kim Bassinger are the love
interest and Robert Duval.Micheal Madsen and Joe Don Baker are also in the
cast. Later tonight over here in the ‘Copa Del Rey’ it’s the first-leg of the
semi-finals, first its Real Madrid v Atl.Madrid then later Barcelona v Real Sociedad!! 3-0 to Real Madrid in a nasty/bad tempered game,2-0 to Barcelona - the second legs next week.

COOL AND DRY IN SUNNY MANILVA ON TUESDAY;
TUESDAY 4th/
FEBRUARY 2014.
This
morning I was up early and after my tea and toast (Thanks Brenda!) I went and
picked Andy up to go across to La Linea to the Traffic Department to finalize
the transfer of my English license to Spanish; nearly there as all the
paperwork was fine and the correct documents were duly stamped – now I have to
wait for all the paperwork to be verified over in England and will then receive
a E-Mail to go and collect my new Spanish license and pass in the English one –
back in La Linea!
One
document that was not necessary was the medical certificate, you don’t need one
for the transfer – this means that I was totally miss-lead by the people down
in the ‘Sabimedic’ office which cost 40 euros – I’ am going to call in and tell
them my thoughts – after all it was the village doctor and Deputy Mayor that
did the certificate, he owns the business!!
The
pictures above show the ‘Rock’ on a grey day and the new cruise liner that is
now docked in the Gibraltar marina, permantly as a floating hotel and conference centre. We called again into McDonalds again for the 'Sausage & Egg Mac-Muffins !!
Yesterday evening
we went across to the hospital for Brenda’s appointment with the Eye
consultant, after all sorts of tests – a good result as everything is fine and
she only needs one more check up in March;now for the bad news/good news day - the hospital has just called to say that my 'Prostrate Biopsy' is next Monday at 5-00pm !! Oh B----R !!
.
When we got back I followed the Manchester City v Chelsea game – not good as City lost 0-1 and did not play well, Jose Mourinho had done everything right and Chelsea totally outplayed City!
.

Yesterday
evening I also received a long E-mail for our fried John who had visited on our
recommendation “ The Montgomery Pub & Kitchen” in Eastham village on the
Wirral where he lives; it read like a classic “Michael Winner” ‘Critique’ that
the late-departed food connoisseur who used to write in the ‘Sunday Times ! Thanks John,
we look forward to more of them in the future!! I totally agree with your
comment about the policy of the ‘New Moon Pub Company’ of only adding a fixed
cash amount (£ 10-50) to each bottle of wine to encourage the drinking of the
finer stuff! We have done this for many year’s in all our business’s and also
when out always drank the finest wines off the lists knowing that the mark-up
was low! That was my excuse anyway!!
Tonight we
are having ‘Steak a la Plancha’ with sautéed Baby Mushrooms and crispy-fried
Onions, mine topped with a fried Campo Egg and Brenda’s with deep-fried Garlic
buds, finely sliced Green Beans, twice-cooked chips and a little ‘Béarnaise’
sauce on the side. We will then catch up with the news, sport and weather
reports, in the rest of Spain especially along the Northern coast
and in San Sebastian yesterday they had severe storms and damage
but as usual we have missed most of it, the next two days are slightly damp but
it’s due to pick up over the weekend.

A COLD AND CRISP SUNNY MANILVA AT THE START OF THE WEEK;
MONDAY 3rd/
FEBRUARY. 2014.
Today it’s
a little overcast and cool – so this morning after our tea and toast we made
two calls to England, one to arrange the transfer to our Spanish bank account
of some annuities that come in at this time of year and the other call to a
company in Swindon that I’ve dealt with for many years, now on-line to order
some Mouthwash tablets to be sent to the house as there is no alternative
product here in Spain! I then shot around to the chemists to pick up some
tablets that I needed.
We then
wrapped ourselves up and went for a long walk with the dog down and then up to
the Manilva Green Hotel to see Mano and drop off his papers; Anna is due back
from England this coming Sunday evening late at Malaga Airport .
Last night
here in ‘La Liga’ Real Madrid drew 1-1 in Bilbao and Ath.Mardrid won 4-0 and so went
to the top of the ‘La Liga’ by 3 points with Barcelona and Real both second! Over in
England in the afternoon Liverpool could only draw at West Brom 1-1; tonight is
the big game of the season so far when Manchester City welcome Chelsea !
We had a
really enjoyable evening with Claus and Doreen last night when they joined us
for supper; thanks for the ‘Birds of Paradise’ from your garden and the Smoked
Trout that Claus had smoked in his ‘Smoker’ in their villa, we are going over
next Sunday in the afternoon to see the villa and join them no doubt for
something as the following week they are due to go back to Bremen, its over
2,800kms and it takes them usually 30 hours! It was very nice getting to know
you and we are looking forward to our future contacts; this morning I’ve sent
them an E-mail and have become friends with Claus on Facebook! Doreen also left
some very nice comments in out little ‘Red Guest’ comments book – thanks!!
This
evening we are going across to the hospital past Marbella as Brenda has an
appointment with the Eye consultant for some update tests; on the way back I
will top up the petrol and cash as tomorrow morning I’ am going across to la
Linea to the traffic department again with Andy to hopefully get my driving license
changed to Spanish! Watch this space.
Tonight for
supper we are having cold Chicken with a fry-up of the leftover vegetables
& potatoes for supper when we get back.

A CRISP AND WARM DAY IN SUNNY MANILVA ON SUNDAY;
SUNDAY 2nd/
EBRUARY 2014.
We awoke to
another beautiful day down here on the ‘Costa Del Sol’ with a clear blue sky
and the sun out, it’s crisp but no wind; after our fresh Orange juice ( In
season at the moment!) and tea & toast we got our Sunday roast on the go
ready to welcome Claus and Doreen this evening.
‘Roast
Lemon Chicken’ with savory Herb stuffing, Broccoli & Cauliflower florets in
a four- cheese cream sauce,Carrott Batons with Ginger, Brussels Sprouts with
Smoked Bacon Lardons,Garden Peas, Baby New Potatoes and of course my famous
Roast Potatoes in Goose Fat! I’ve just made my famous finger–licking gravy!!
I roast the
Chicken after seasoning it with lots of Lemon juice on a bed of ‘Trivets’ – all
the ends of all the vegetables, chopped with smashed Garlic,Onions,Mushroom
stalks etc. My secret ingredients are added and then some Vegetable Oil to
baste the Chicken with as it cooks; later after straining the trivets out I
make the gravy in the roasting tray with a good Chicken & Vegetable stock
and check the consistency and colour as well as the taste before straining it
and leaving to cook out! The roast potatoes are par-boiled and shaken
rigorously before adding them to the hot Goose Fat!
To start we
are having a local Chorizo thinly sliced, Iberian Ham, sliced Semi- Curado
Cheese and my special English Pork sausages which I cut into pieces after
cooking and toss them in a good measure of Worchester sauce – ‘A La Savoy’ For
our dessert I’ve made a Pancake Batter to make the ‘Crepes’ to order with lots
of Lemon Juice and Vanilla Ice cream!
We are
going to have a nice glass of ‘Cava Royal’ to start and with the meal we are
having a white ‘Marques De Caceres Rioja’ 2012 and then a fine ‘Torres Sangre
De Toro’ 2012. Possible the ‘House’ cocktail (Caipirinha’s) to finish!! More
details later with pictures as well as the football scores.
After getting things ready and freshening up we went for a short walk with the dog and ended up sat outside 'Bar Rojas' in the hot afternoon sunshine; cool drinks and Paella followed! Brenda has now shot up to the roof terrace for the first time, but not the last this year!
Last nights film was a classic true story about the Mustang horse 'Hildalgo' who back in 1891 won a 3,000 mile race across the 'Nejo' desert against 'Bedduin Arabian' horses ridden by the American long distance rider 'Frank Hopkins' played by Viggo Mortenson - Omar Sharif plays of course a Arab Prince with the female interest played by Zuleikha Robinson - to this day the ancestors of the Mustang still run wild and free on the plains of America!

OVERCAST GREY AND DAMP IN SUNNY MANILVA ON SATURDAY;
SATURDAY 1st/
FEBRUARY 2014.
I had a
little lie in this morning as Brenda was up to collect a new gas bottle (Hot
water!) from the delivery man who comes along on Saturday and Wednesday
mornings at around 9-00am; I was then treated to Poached Eggs on toast to set
me up for the day ahead! The weather today is overcast and grey and damp later
but then its picking up for a few days into next week which is good as we are
out and about.
The weather
is also effecting my TV watching this morning as I can’t get a download contact
to watch BBC TVs ‘Saturday Morning Kitchen’ as normal upstairs in the office on
the smaller PC! No satellite connection is available – which is a bit of a let
down as I was looking forward to today’s special edition for the “Chinese New Year”
with Ken Hom!
On Monday
evening Brenda has an appointment with the ‘Eye Consultant’ for a check up at
the hospital past Marbella;on Tuesday morning I’ am going over to La Linea, with
Andy again to hopefully finalize the transfer of my driving license to Spanish
at the Traffic Department and then on Wednesday lunchtime I have a one with the
‘Dermatology Consultant’ back at the hospital for a check up ( Blood) - so we
are going to call into Estepona on the way for a couple of essentials and get a
new battery for Brenda’s watch from the jewelers that we use. Then on Friday
its Sabinillas for the regular shopping before we go to the ‘Inauguration Service’
down at the Church on Saturday evening after all the repairs and
re-furbishment.
So after
typing the Blog I will get ready tonight’s supper which is ‘Steak a la Plancha’
with sautéed Baby Mushrooms and Finely Sliced Green Beans and of course
twice-cooked chips! On the side we are having a sauceboat of ‘Bourguigonne’
sauce! Chispa has just come crashing in full of the joys of spring with the
wind in her tail, she is running around mad. skidding on the Marble
floores, jumping in the air and generally causing mayhem!
This
afternoon it’s a big sports day which I will hopefully be able to watch on the
larger PC,weather and satellite connections permitting! Over in England in the ‘Premiere League’ Everton
welcome Aston Villa then on Sunday Liverpool travel to West Brom before the big one on Monday evening when Manchester City host Chelsea ! Over here in ‘La Liga’ today it’s Barcelona v Valencia and Real Madrid at Athletic Bilbao.
A good win for Everton to come from behind and win 2-1.Oh dear,a rare home defeat for Barcelona 2-3!
