I was up first this morning to see little
princess ‘ Reina’ back with us for the day, the village is very quiet, the
school is closed as it’s a national bank holiday in Spain for ‘ Constitution
Day’- it was also closed yesterday, as were all the schools over the region,
due to the flooding. The ‘ Big ‘ clean up is going very well, last night I
spoke to our Mayor, Mario, our neighbour, as he came home after 48 hrs without
sleep, I thanked him for all the work that the Council is doing to start to get
things back to normal.
After our normal breakfast we got this
evenings supper on the go, ‘ Roast Loin of Pork’ with a savoury Mixed Herb
& Onion Stuffing with finger licking pan Gravy, the ‘ Vegetables Chef ’ has
prepared Cabbage with Acelgas, Crushed Carrots & Turnips & Cauliflower
Florets in a three Cheese sauce, the ‘ Duck Fat’ Roast Potatoes will go in the
oven this evening.
This morning the weather is back to normal
for this time of the year, overnight the ‘Atlantic’ front moved on and the next
one has arrived, its cloudy with the sun just breaking through, there is no
breeze and the overall temperatures are rising slowly, over the next couple of
the days and over the weekend we have more of the same coming our way.
After supper last night we settled down to
watch a very interesting documentary on ‘BBC 2’ – “ Titanic’s Tragic Twin: The
Britannic Disaster “ – the little known story that took place on the 21st
November 1916 when the sister ship of the Titanic sank in just 55 minutes,
after hitting a German mine while crossing the ‘Mediterranean’ as a ‘ Hospital
Ship’- see below.
It took place as she was steaming at full
speed off a Greek island on a calm sea at 8-00am! Of the total crew etc of 1065
there were 1035 survivors – only 30 died as they were washed into one of the
ships propellers after launching a life boat too early, the ship’s Captain ‘
Bartlett’ was the last to leave, he walked off the bridge as the sea came up,
he was still in his pyjamas, some of the
survivors has been on the Titanic when it sank back in 1912!
The ‘ Britannic’ had been built in the same
ship building dry dock at ‘ Harland and
Wolff’ in Belfast; she was re-designed, a double hull added, new re-enforced
bulkheads, a larger engine capacity and
most importantly new/extra lifeboats powered by electric davits capable of saving
over 3600, the full capacity of 3309
passengers & crew. As usual the BBC’s programme was excellent with survivors
written and spoken memories and family members talking about their relatives.
Thoughts for the Day; See above.
