When we
were talking to Tim he said that after we had finished they were going out to
watch ‘Meteor’s’ but it has taken me a day to catch up on what he said!
Every year
around mid-August the Earth passes through the debris left behind by a comet
called “Swift-Tuttle” that orbits the sun every 133 years, the ‘Perseids’ or
the ‘Tears of Saint Lawrence’ are the meteor showers that are also called
‘Falling Stars’ or ‘Shooting Stars’ – they happen when the tiny partical’s which are traveling at up to 20,000mph strike the Earth’s upper atmosphere - if they
hit the ground they are called a’ Meteorite!’
The nights
of the 11th to 13th AUGUST are predicted to be the best
times with around midnight last night being the maximum – sorry! If you are so
lucky to spot a shooting star be sure to make a wish as they always come true!!
We went up on the roof terrace later in the evening and I got my binocular's out but we could not see any shooting stars - the last time I had them out was back at Ludlow Races in 1986 !!!
See the pictures above taken last night over England;
