THURSDAY 22ND JULY 2010.
Alberto Contador clung to the wheel of Andy Schleck up the final major climb of this year’s Tour de France to remain on course to retain his crown. Shcleck attacked with 10km left on the stage from Pau as they where going up the Tourmalet leaving everybody behind except for Contador;the duo caught the seven-man breakaway group with ease to leave a straight fight between them on the grueling final 8km.Schleck repeatedly looked behind him through the mist to assess the state of Contador, who initially refused to take up the running, they exchanged glances and words as they climbed higher and higher in a frenzy of wheels and madcap spectators; the Spaniard suddenly launched an attack with 4km to go but Schleck responded superbly, giving his rival a long stare when he drew alongside him again.
With the mountain’s finally behind us we are back on the flat of south west France with the 198km stage from Selles-de-Bearn to Bordeaux today, one for the sprinters.
Mark Cavendish stormed to his fourth stage win of this year's Tour de France and his 14th in all on today's 18th stage;there were no changes at the top with Contador retaining his lead.
