THE “ FAMOUS POLLARDS INN ” IN WILLASTON ON THE WIRRAL.
The story of the pictures below is back to a time in our travels in the hotel and pub industry when we have very many happy memories ; we took over the ‘ Pollards ’ at very short notice when our dear friend Jane Casson ( ne- Mooney ) rang us at home in North Wales in Rhyd-y Foel and asked us if we could come over and look after the ‘ Pollards ’as the manager had left the day before the re-opening of the new conservatory and we had just finished with the ‘ Hotel Seventy Degrees ’ She was working at the time in sales for “ Greenhall Whitley ” and the area manager was her friend Chris Allen. So that is how we ended up at “ The Hidden Inn on the Wirral ” as we christened it ! The rest is history – we went in as ‘ Self Employed ’ on a special contract with Greenhall’s and as it turned out we both did very well out of it over the next few years ! The brewery was going through a lot of changes with its hotels division and later the pub division – during our time there we went to the founding first meeting of “ Premier Inns ” which took place at another one of our later places that we again took over at sort notice, the famous “ Swan Hotel ” in Tarporley - but that’s another story ! Our time at the inn was one of our most as I said happy times in the pub side of the industry and Brenda in particular was very content and loved the atmosphere and lifestyle ; it was made this way by our very good and loyal staff, the local customers and also the support of the brewery ! We must mention Tina our waitress from Moscow, Angelo our eccentric Italian waiter, Kathryn ( Kate ) our very good assistant manager and her later husband Jeff who was our bartender, the two Andy’s, Greg, Peter and others who were our chefs, Sue Cross who was always very helpful and of course all the staff that worked for us over the years including a certain young lady of sixteen ‘ Izzy ’ who is now one of the team of the new ‘ Pollards ’!! During our time there we started the music night in the conservatory, our legendry Wednesday night ‘ Quiz ’ night with my whistle and Red and Yellow cards ! ( I still have them ) Our sponsorship of the local football team , the ‘ Real Ales ’that we introduced, I became a ‘ Cellar Master ’ we also started the first BBQ at the time on the Wirral –it was on a Bank Holiday weekend and we got swamped ! And finally the famous umbrellas – we ended up with 36 in blocks of six, Moet Chandon ( we still have one ! ) Coca Cola,Schwepps, Greenhalls,Apollnaris water and Walkers crisps ! I had to wire them down every day as they became collectors items ! Great fun times and lots of good memories – thanks.
Thought for the Day;
The happiest memories are of moments that ended when they should have.
