TUESDAY 24th JULY 2012.

Amelia May Earhart was a noted American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first woman to receive the US Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first ‘ Aviatrix ’ to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean on the 29th May 1932 in a “ Lockheed Vega 5B ” which lasted 14 hours and 56 minutes – she landed in Culmore, Derry, Northern Ireland after taking off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland.The picture below is an artists impression and the picture above is the actual plane with her flying Jacket on the right – it is in the ‘ National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. During an attempt in 1937 to make a ‘ Circumnavigational ’ fight of the globe in a Purdue-funded “ Lockheed Model 10 Electra ” Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island ! Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.
