MONDAY 8th/
AUGUST 2014.
Our last
lie in until Saturday this week as on Tuesday and Thursday we are on doggy
sitting duties, on Wednesday I’m at the surgery and finally on Friday it’s our
regular shopping day! The weather forecast is looking good for the week with
the temperatures hovering at round the 35degs mark and hopefully just a little
cooler during the night on the 25degs setting!
Today here
in sunny Manilva is a local Bank Holiday for the obvious reasons! ‘Chispa’ came running in just in time for a
little breakfast with us, as we are not able to go for our long walks around
the village for the moment, for the obvious reason, we see more of her during
the day and evening as she calls in to see us.’Reina’ is here on Tuesday
&Thursday and ‘Scruffy’ is coming along on Tuesday lunchtime for a two day
sleep over so she will have her friends to play with.
Yesterday
after our fry-up and an early ‘Happy Hour’ cocktail we set off to hit the
streets for the festival; it was already packed as we reached the top so we
hung out at the Town Hall entrance by the side of the main stage and had a good
chat with the local councilors Mario,Deigo,Marcus,Eva and Pacqui as things got
on the way.
The main
topic of conversation was next years local elections in May as the outcome of
them will determine who is in power for the next four years, will they still
have their jobs and most important who will be in charge for the 2015 ‘Vedimia
Festival’?! It was then time to pass out the 2014 ‘Vendimia Sombreros’ to get
the party started!
We hung
around for a while and had a cool drink, as the day went on it got hotter and
the cooling fine water spray from under the canopies was very welcome for both
the crowds and the horse display later; we kept popping back to the house for ‘pit
stops’ to refuel!! Then it was time for the ceremonial crushing of the grapes
in ‘Plaza de la Vendimia’ See the pictures above of the festival as it
happened. In the pictures it looks like the 'Three Musketeers' are still there in the pit crushing the grapes!!
This year
as well as me going into semi- retirement my two fellow ‘Musketeers’ Mario
& Diego also rested and left it to two local young ‘Bucks’ They were not
the same, no rhythm or coordination and it was soon noticed by the Manilva TV
crew filming; so Belen the presenter and her camera man approached me and asked
my why I was not crushing the grapes this year as normal! After a little
information chat they then recorded a long conversation with me in Spanish and
English with Belen interpreting the more difficult parts; once again a local TV
star is borne, to the amusement of Brenda and Brian & Lilli who had joined
us by then!!
It was then
time to come back up to the house for our ‘Chicken Curry’ traditional supper on
Vendimia Sunday; Lilli joined us but Brian and his mates carried on. Lilli has
to go back to Finland towards the end of the month to tie
up any loose ends before finally settling back here in sunny Manilva.
So back to
today here in sleepy sunny Manilva, which is very quiet, our neighbors in the
street have all gone off to their ‘Campo’s’ for the day and meanwhile up in
Calle Mar the street cleaning has got under way with a skeleton force of
workers, the rest will be sorted in the next few days. Tonight for our supper
we having ‘Entrecote Steak’ and twice-cooked Frits and all the trimmings.
PS; Today’s
stage 16 of the ‘Vuelta’ is a mountain stage from ‘San Martin Del Rey Aurelion’
to ‘La Farrapona – Lagos de Somiedo’ up in the North West of Spain as this year
the tour finishes in ‘Santiago de Compostela’for the first time, notMadrid. No
doubt both Valverde and Froome will be attacking again Contador who is still in
the Red Jersey.
Thoughts
for the Day; See above.
