MANILVA START OR THE WEEK.
MONDAY/TUESDAY 30th/ 31st/ JULY 2012.
Monday was an at home day to catch up with the chores around the house; later we went for a short walk around the village and I took the picture below of the on-going work on the underground car park of the new ‘ Plaza Pozo del Rey ’ – the latest forecast is that it will all be finished by December ! We are now into the ‘Sticky’ time of the year and very little change in the temperature at night, Brenda is getting on with her book very well and enjoying it as she is out on the roof terrace under the shade until the sun moves around when I join her in the early evening for our cocktails ! I have for the first time a little colour on my body as I’ am never out of my swimming shorts! Sadly no pool!! In the evening we had Roast Shoulder of Lamb again thanks to, even if I do say so my self, some rather clever carving with help of my special old ‘Sabatier ’Chef’s carving knife! Later we watched a very good film on TVE1 called “ Breach ” made in 2007 – it is a true story of an senior FBI agent turned Russian spy who is finally uncovered ; Chris Cooper plays the main part and the young FBI agent who helps to catch him is played by Ryan Phillippe – very compelling and one not to be missed.
Today, Tuesday it is very hot 38 degs and rising and the forecast for over the weekend and into next week is more of the same and hotter ; we have started to get ready for Brian and Lilli’s visit on the 27TH August for about ten days over the ‘ Vendimia ’ weekend on the 1ST September, Brenda has started on the main guest room, we have the best sheets and pillow cases out and the dressing room is getting the once over, the deep freeze is filling up as we have started planning the menu’s and last week we got a new front door key cut with a Blue key tag especially for Brian ( Everton ! ) – there will be an official handing over ceremony when they arrive which will take place on the Red Carpet ! The car ( Ferrari Red ) will not be getting re-sprayed as requested !! As you can guess we are looking forward to seeing them. Tonight after our supper of pan-fried Pork Cutlets with Boulangere Potatoes we are going to watch the programme about Spanish people working and living abroad, tonight it is Finland !
PS; We have also started to stock up the beer cellar with ' Cruz Campo '
Thought for the Day ;
A true friend is one who thinks you are a good egg even if you are half-cracked.

MANILVA OVER THE WEEKEND.
SATURDAY/SUNDAY 28th/ 29TH/ JULY 2012.
No change in the weather over the weekend and all of next week – Sun! On Saturday I of course watched the Olympic Men’s Road Race as you can read in the report below – not much more to say about it – very disappointing! In the evening we had Steak a la Plancha with crisp Chips for supper and then settled down to watch a good film, “ Heist ” from 1992 with Gene Hackman and Danny De Vito in a crime thriller with lots of twists about a Gold Robbery.
On Sunday morning we got the roast on the go, Shoulder of Lamb studded with Garlic and Rosemary, Brenda has been yearning for some Lamb for a while, I made a large dish of ‘ Boulangere Potatoes ’ and Brenda had also asked for some Braised Onions – she also got ready some Cabbage,Carrots,Garden Peas and the rest of the Ratatouille from last week ! The finger licking Gravy was herb flavored and along with the fresh Mint sauce we had a “ Helluva ” roast dinner ! At lunchtime after freshening up we went up to Bar Rojas, Andy and Maria were sat outside, it was Maria’s day off and Andy does not go into work till later at the restaurant in Duquesa Marina so they had a spot of lunch as we caught up with their news;
Later I watched the Olympic Ladies Road Race which took place over the same route but shorter in the pouring rain; at the last Olympic’s in China Nicola Cooke for Great Britain won in a thunderstorm as she took the last corner with out fear and won the Gold medal, sadly this time Lizzie Armitstead,from Otley in Yorkshire,could only manage Silver bur she put up a “ Helluva “ performance as the Dutch rider Marianne Vos won. Afterwards a beaming Lizzie said that she had ' definitely won the Silver rather than lost the Gold ' This time the Great Britain rider’s got the tactics just right with special praise going to Emma Pooley who rode tirelessly for the team. At the same time I was also watching the Grand Prix from Hungary in which Lewis Hamilton won and just about keeps his title hopes alive !
After our dinner we watched on the Classic Film Channel “ Patriot Games ” from 1992 with Harrison Ford in the ‘ Jack Ryan ’ part taken from the Tom Clancy series of novels ; the cast also had Sean Bean, Ann Archer, Samuel L. Jackson and James Earl Jones.
Thought for the Day;
The thing that contributes to anyone reaching the goal he wants is simple wanting that goal badly enough.

LONDON OLYMPIC MENS ROAD RACE.
SATURDAY 28th JULY 2012.
Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan has just won the race - sadly our British team with Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were out road in the last hour of the race as they left the ' Box Hill ' circuit and raced back to the Mall in London ! Their tactics were wrong from the start ! Oh dear,very disappointing to say the least !!
PS; What I have discovered is that the BBC's coverage on its inter-active sports page is brilliant over all the events - 33 in total,I think, so I'am able to watch them on the large PC - also the TVE1 Spanish coverage on our TV is very comprehensive as well.

LONDON OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY 2012.
FRIDAY 27th JULY 2012.
The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games taking place in London for the third time was not to be missed -the event was directed by ' Danny Boyle ' and lived up to all the hype,bouncing punks,geese,the mosh pit versus the posh pit,buzzing helicopters.dragonflies.a statue of Sir Winston Churchill coming to life,blazing gold rings of fire,cows. milkmaids plus David Beckham being unbelievably cool ! Welcome to the barmiest opening ceremony in Olympic history,an explosion of nonsense and tremendous good fun.
As the world looked on and scratched its head in bemusement on a set that looked like a cross between the outskirts of Emmerdale and the Tubbytronic Superdome - the history of Great Britain was unfolded !!It was dazzling and bold and so very much us !
No more details just to say that the 204 counties taking part were represented by the copper petals which converged in a spectacular fashion to form the cauldron of fire in the middle of the Olympic Stadium.
The pictures above are just a very small sample of the night.

MANILVA TODAY.
FRIDAY 27th JULY 2012.
This morning we were up bright and early after all the excitement of last night; I jumped on the bus, eventually, as at my first attempt it did not appear and shot down to Sabinillas to pick up the papers and when I got back we went for a walk with Cheta down to the local market in the village for some flower’s, the work is progressing on the underground car park at new Plaza Pozo del Rey as you can see in the pictures above. We picked up our Steak for dinner on Saturday and I then went on the WWW to catch up with the news; over in Cheshire in Northwich it is David and Jane’s first wedding anniversary today, “Congratulations” to you both – we know that you will have a “Helluva “Day. See the picture above. In our e-mails there were some very nice comments and pictures from Norway, the people we met the other night up at Bar Rojas, Anette, Emilia and Odd Bjorn have set us as promised some pictures and also some very nice comments about our short time with them – thank you all and we will reply to them shortly – the pictures are also above.
Tonight it is the turn on the ‘ Manilva Brass Band ’on the stage for their concert; I will pop up and take some pictures but we are not going to see it as we are joining the other billon people of the global TV audience to watch the spectacular opening of the 2012 Olympic Games from the new stadium in south London ! The gates have just opened and the ‘ Queens ’ Bentley and ‘ David Beckham’s ’are ready and waiting !! Come on England show them how to put on a show ! The Olympic Torch is nearly there, it is on a spectacular Barge at the moment ( Who is going to light the Olympic Flame ? ) Sir Chris Hoy,one of my hero’s is carrying the Union Jack !! All will be revealed later – watch this space after you have watched it yourselves !!
We are having for supper this evening a ‘ Sea Food Platter ’ consisting of very large shelled Prawns cooked in Lemon Butter, shallow fried whole Langoustines in Breadcrumbs, you eat them whole a bit like soft shell Crabs in the USA ! Cold Crab with Marie Rose Sauce and a seafood ‘ Vinaigrette ’ which I made earlier of Mussels,Octopus,Crab Claws, Baby Prawns and a little diced Red Pepper for colour ! Plenty of Lemon and Lime wedges are called for !
Thought for the Day;
The difference between a smart man and a wise man; a smart man knows what to say, a wise man knows whether or not to say it.

MANILVA THIS WEEK.
TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY/THURDAY 24th/25th/ 26th JULY 2012.
On Tuesday morning I got a Skype call from Andy, his car needed a new battery and could I take him to Estepona for a new one ; so I picked him up and we shot across to the car Hypermarket. Brenda had an at home day as she had an appointment at the hairdresser’s, for the first time, at the top of our street in Calle Mar at 5-30 pm. Success – her hair is looking good and she saved 50 euros at the same time ! In the evening we had Pork Cutlets for supper with Lyonnaise potatoes before we settled down to watch the news.
Wednesday morning we went for a walk around the village with Cheta ; as you can see in the pictures below they have started to plant-up the new ‘ Plaza de la Vendimia ’ The bandstand was erected in front of the Old Town Hall ready for the theater concert in the evening and the work is still ongoing on the new Bodega y Vinedos . When we got back to the house I made my famous ‘ Beef Stew ’i.e., “ Scouse ” for dinner ; I managed to find/use eleven different vegetables along with the Potatoes – all to my ‘ Secret ’ recipe of my dear Mum ! ( with the addition of some Spanish ingredients ) In the early evening we were up on the roof terrace for our usual ‘ Tincture ’ when quit suddenly a large black cloud came over along with thunder and lightening ! We watched as it advancing towards us and dashed inside just as the heavens opened ! It was a typical Spanish cloud burst, not forecast. and was on for about half an hour; the outcome was that we discovered later that the concert had been cancelled ! No change in the weather, it’s still very hot and sunny. In the evening later on we watched a rather gruesome thriller “ Mind Hunters ” from 2004.it starred ‘ LL Cool J. Katherine Morris, Jonny Lee Miller and Val Kilmer – it was about FBI agents on a training exercise on a remote Government Island and what happens next !
THURSDAY 26TH JULY 2012 “ THE FESTIVAL OF SANTA ANA ” in Manilva;
In the morning at 8-00am the very loud fire crackers were let off to annouse the start of the Festival – the ‘ Patron Saint ’ of Manilva and all “ Anna’s ” ! In the morning there are games for all the young children up in Calle Mar, Tug of War, Bicycle races, Sprint races and water fights ! At lunchtime we took our friend Gillian over to the airport in Gibraltar as she was going back to the Isle of Wight to check on the sale of her house; on the way back we stopped in Sabinillas for the weekend shopping, we had planned to go to ‘ Morrison’s ’in Gibraltar but the queues were too long to get across at this time.
In the evening we walked up to Bar Rojas to grab a table as it gets very busy late on before the procession come along; Mano and ‘Anna ’ had just beaten us there, later Sally ‘Ann ’ and Dylan came along and then Carlos with ‘Anna ’ Mari and Fabio – all the “ Guerrero Clan ” in one spot at the same time – along with three ‘ Anna’s ’ Time to celebrate !! The pictures above show the Tableau of Santa Anna leaving the church of ‘ Santa Ana ’and then as it made its way through the village led by the Manilva Brass Band and followed by the civic dignitaries – this is very much a local Festival and all the children and ladies dress up in their finest ‘ Flamenco ‘ dress’s and costumes – it is our favorite one of all the festivals with a great family atmosphere as they all celebrate late into the night with singing and dancing to the Bands on he stage. We walked down to ‘ Bodega Augustin ‘’ with the ‘ Gang ’ for a late supper; we had a selection of Tapas, Russian Salad, diced Pork in Tomato salsa, Fried Calamari and baby Squid and Octopus and Prawn salad – the kids and Anna also had there special combination Burger and I had the Veal Escalope with Patatas Fritas and a fried egg ! We then retired down to Mano and Anna’s house just with them and cracked open a bottle of “ Ana Cordiniau Cava ” to finish off the night – we also managed to watch the Olympic edition of ‘ Absolutely Fabulous ’ – It is very, very funny don’t miss it !!
On the way back up to our house as we got near I put my had in my pocket for the house keys – no keys ! Panic then ensued ! Brenda had popped down to the house when we were up at Bar Rojas earlier and had given them back to me – we thought- we shot back down first to Bodega Augustin to check – no luck – so we tried to call Mano and Anna at their house no luck as they had gone to bed and set the alarm for Mano to get up early for work ! We then ran up to Bar Rojas to check were we had been sitting – no luck again ! Lumy and Manolo also could not help us so it looked like we would have to call the police and fire brigade to break in !! Just then Lumy’s eldest son appeared with them, he had found then on the pavement where I was sitting when he was clearing up - what a relief to say the least !!! The end to one “ Helluva “ Day in sunny Manilva .
Thought for the Day
May your pockets be heavy and your heart light. May good luck pursue you each morning and night.
