THURSDAY/FRIDAY 29th/30th DECEMBER 2011.
Well the weather at the moment is just gorgeous and the forecast for the New Year weekend is more of the same; after a long walk with Cheta, on Thursday morning, we came back to the house and gave her feet a little ‘Dobby’ to smarten her up; Brenda was up on the roof terrace all afternoon and caught the sun on her front this time! Meanwhile I started watching on the BBCIPlayer “Great Expectations” and caught the first two episodes; as usual it is the BBC at its best; the cast is just right, with Ray Winston and Gillian Anderson in the main roles and the lavish adaptation is mesmerizing- more to come. As it is the holiday period it is also film time on all the channels and so we are watching more, especially with our language changer working! “ Gandhi ” was very good with Ben Kingsley in the main role and directed by Richard Attenborough-in another life we did not have the time to watch films from start to finish so we are making up now! We are also into ‘Poldark ’as it is on at a time in the early evening when we can watch it, episode after episode! Last night we watched a terrific film “Zodiac”which is about two San Francisco journalists’s played by Jake Gillenhall and Robert Downey Jnr, who are obsessed with trying to track down a serial killer, the story starts in 1969 and comes to an end in 2002! I won’t spoil it for you anymore but the surprise at the end is that it is a true story!!
For supper we had something a little different, Brenda had ‘Confit of Duck Leg ’ I am not a great lover of Duck and I had ‘Albondegas,Meatballs, in Tomato Sauce’ which I had made earlier in the day.
Today, Friday, we went down to Sabinillas to top up the store cupboard; we got a lift down and a lift back so it did not take us long, we then walked down to the market in the village for fresh flowers and vegetables and fruit and on the way back stopped at the butchers for our Saturday night steak ! We have treated ourselves to another whole ‘Rodalballo’ Turbot for tonight’s dinner; Brenda is having it with Fresh Asparagus and I’m having Garden Peas, we have also got some lovely small New Potatoes which we have found in a wholesale vegetable supplier down in Sabinillas. The latest picture below at the top is Amelia’s, Juan wife and Mano’s best friend, window display in her shop in the village, the council is running a competition for the best one – Watch this space.
PS; The Turbot was in Brenda's words ' Amazing '
Thought for the Day;
I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet. ‘Gandhi ’

MANILVA THIS WEEK.
TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY 27th/28th DECEMBER 2011.
The weather forecast for the week and over the weekend is more of the same, sun and blue skies and getting warmer; Tuesday was no exception as we went for our walk with Cheta around the village after our local TV repair man had called in to get us back to normal, he was here about an hour and worked on the mast and receivers and totally retuned the TV; the outcome is that we now have all the main channels working perfectly and we now are able to watch any English origin films and programmes,in English, by pressing the translate button! We found episodes of ‘Cheers ’and even a golden oldie ‘Poldark ’from back in 1975 as well as current shows. Later in the morning I made a hot Curry Sauce and in the evening we had, guess what? Turkey Curry and Basmati rice. We then settled down to watch a film in English ‘The Devils Brigade ’ a world war two story starring William Holden and Cliff Robertson – all action.
Today, Wednesday is even nicer, shirt only if you feel like it,we had a Skype Video call from Jack and Lyn on their way back from Sydney to Melbourne- they where in their caravan and they had just had a seafood supper at a restaurant on the coast by Eden above Cape Howe. We then set off on our walk around the village; we bumped in Anna, Carlos and Fabio outside Bar Rojas so caught up with all the news and had a nice drink sat in the sunshine, Brenda yesterday actually caught a little sun on her shoulders when she was sat up on the roof terrace! Fabio was playing with a baby Lamb that Manolo,from Bar Rojas, is bottle feeding-it has been abandoned by its mother as you can see in the picture above, also they have started to repair the old Cinema which has been closed for many year, it is opposite the new park, in the past all the villages had Cinema’s and most of the older people in the village did the courting there ! Watch this space. Tonight we are giving the Turkey a rest and are having Steak and Chips with Mushrooms and Onions for a change.
Thought for the Day;
Forget about mistakes that you can’t change. But don’t forget the lessons that you’ve learnt.

MANILVA OVER CHRISTMAS.
SATURDAY/SUNDAY MONDAY 24th/25th/26th DECEMBER 2011.
CHRISTMAS EVE – “ NOCHEBUENA ” 2011.
After breakfast we went for a brisk walk as a little breeze down from the mountains was hitting the village but the sun and blue skies where still out; we then had a at home day as our little problems hit us, the TV Black Box can’t be changed until Tuesday when the shops re-open so no TV over Xmas,we are listening to the national music station ‘ Kiss FM ’ which is non stop good music. The new mixer tap on the kitchen double sink has just been fixed as I am typing this blog by our local plumber and the dishwasher is for another day as it is only the two of us over the holidays.Mano and Anna called in late in the afternoon to see if there was anything he could do to help us but by then it was too late, he is working for the next week as he has surprise guests arriving at the villa so we will not see much of them over the holiday’s. They called back later in the evening on their way to the family ‘ Nochebuena ’ dinner around at the Spanish side of the family house, it’s a big night in Spain as they all get together. In the evening we had our Saturday night special of Steak and Chips and then settled down to read.
CHRISTMAS DAY 2011.
On Sunday morning we got our Xmas dinner ready; Roast Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing, Pigs in their Blankets, Roast Parsnips in Manilva Honey, Fresh local Sprouts with Smoked Bacon bits, Glazed Carrots and Garden Peas, Local Baby New Potatoes and Goose Fat Roasted Potatoes and of course Finger licking Pan Gravy; To follow Local fresh Strawberries and whipped cream. This year it is just the two of us – no bookings ! The pictures below show the ‘ Don and Dona of Manilva ’in their finest Red outfits as we had our early evening ‘ Friendly ’Gin and Tonic and Bacardi and Coke before dinner. After getting everything on the go we went for a walk with Cheta around the village; as you can see I had my Father Xmas Hat and Beard on which brought a little joy and laughter to the locals, they don’t celebrate Christmas Day as we do ! When we got back we had our Brunch, Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon with a bottle of nice chilled Cava and freshly squeezed local Orange juice to set us on the way.
In the evening we had our dinner sat at the Xmas decorated table and pulled our crackers; the Turkey Crown ,I roasted the Legs and Wings separate, was juicy and succulent and the dark meat was very tasty, all the vegetables were spot on and the Duck Fat Roasted Potatoes were crisp and the Turkey Pan Gravy was to die for – even if I do say so ! A fine Rioja went down well as we brought a little Xmas Cheer into the house.
BOXING DAY 2011.
This morning after a little lie in we had our morning cup of Tea and Toast; we have changed the menu for today, we are having Cold Turkey tonight, we love cold cuts of meats, and have put the Rib Of Beef away for either New Years Eve ( Nochevieja ) or ‘ Los Reyes Magos ’ on the sixth of January; at lunchtime we are having a proper Brunch, Eggs,Bacon,Chorizo, Mushrooms, Tomato,Chipoatas and Sauté Potatoes to keep us going ! We have just watched on the BBCIPlayer the Xmas special edition of “ Absolutely Fabulous ” – which it was ! the BBC at its best, Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumly,June Whitfield,Jane Horrocks and Julia Sawalha were perfect and the comedy was right up to date as you would expect – just one problem – not long enough and we need more !
PS; This afternoon I will be watching the Premier League Football from England,there is no football in Spain until the 8TH January ( They have a holiday ) Later I will try and watch the ' William Hill King George V1 Chase from Kempton Park - to see the long awaited clash between Kauto Star and the new pretender Long Run !
PPS; No joy with watching the racing live but Kauto Star created racing history when winning the race for the fifth time - beating Long Run last years winner,before it was four successive wins for the horse ! The crowd at Kempton Park went mad !!
.
Thought for the Day;
If you nail two things together that have never been nailed together before, some schmuck will buy it from you.

MANILVA CHRISTMAS DAY 2011.
We would like to wish all our family and friends a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy,Healthy and Wealthy New Year from us in Sunny Manilva.

MANILVA TODAY.
SATURDAY 24th DECEMBER 2011.
As I have been posting the blog Brenda was out walking the dog and spotted the ‘Xmas Pastoral Group’ warming up; I shot out with my slippers on and caught them as they passed along Calle Mar at the top of our street and took the pictures above – talk about hot off the press!
The folk music of the Pastoral group are heard all over the festive period, their self-penned songs reflect the lives of the local people as families, friends and neighbours get together; traditionally some members of the choir play tambourines and ‘ Zambomba ’water drums as well as an ‘ Anis ’bottle as you can see. The words ‘ Festive Cheer ’spring to mind as it adds to the atmosphere in the village. The drum’s lay down a thumping beat as the Anis bottles are scrapped and the tambourines rattled and the choir sings happy songs !! Long live Manilva.
PS; The group has just returned to Calle Mar outside Bar Rojas and have retired for a well deserved drink !!
PPS; Not a good day on the home front,the TV black box has gone on the blink-so no TV as the TV engineer,who came within the hour,was not able to fix it and of course the shops were shut by then ! The new mixer tap in the kitchen on the double sinks is acting up ie; no hot water and no plumber is available and finally the dishwasher ( Not Brenda ! ) will not empty !! They say it comes in three's !!!

MANILVA LAST NIGHT.
FRIDAY 23rd DECEMBER 2011.
Yet another glorious day down here in sunny Manilva as we set off again on the bus, for the second day running, with it all to our selves! We finished all the shopping and were soon backing in the house unpacking; Cheta came charging in through the shutters as normal, she does it with one flick! So we then walked down to the local market and ordered the large bag of potatoes, they dropped it off later on the scooter, we also bought some lovely fresh Strawberries and Asparagus together with our fourth Poinsettia ! The Xmas market in Calle Mar is still going strong and has added to the atmosphere in the village; in the afternoon I caught up on the BBCIPlayer with the nights before ‘BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2011 ’Mark Cavendish won – the correct result after the best ever year by a British Cyclist by far when he won the World Championship Road Race.
In the evening we walked down to the ‘ Iglesia Santa Ana Church ’ to watch and listen to the Xmas concert performed by the ‘ Manilva Municipal Brass Band’ led by Fernando Antinolo with the choir of the church and the children of friends of the School of Music; The pictures are all above showing the band and choirs in full flow, this year they played and sang a couple of new numbers as well as the old favorites,’ The Blue Danube ’by Johann Strauss 11 and Handel’s ‘ Hallelujah ’ standing out as the ones to be remembered and they finished with the traditional ‘ Marcha Radetzky ’by Johann Strauss 1 – The Clapping Song !! The Gold Medal given to our friend Paco was also at at the same time given to some other people who were the founding members of the band and played together for the first time at Xmas 15 years ago !
We then retired up to bar Rojas where Lumy had our supper ready; Gallo Frito with salad for Brenda, John Dory in Tempura Batter, and for me Carne Mechada with Patatas Fritas, cold sliced cured Pork Rump with chips ! Another memorable day down here in sunny Manilva.
Thought for the Day;
I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.

MANILVA MID WEEK.
WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY 21st/22nd DECEMBER 2011.
Wednesday morning was the best day so far in December; the sun was out early after a spectacular sunrise over the Mediterranean below us, by lunchtime it was shirts only needed at it was hot, in the afternoon Brenda retired to the terrace to sun bathe! On the TV the new President,Mariano Rajoy was sworn in by the King at the palace in Madrid and later he announsed his new government; the Vice-President is a lady who had been at his side for the past eight years and he has cut some government departments, meanwhile the pound is up again today and will brake the high spot for the year before the stock exchange closes later. In the morning we prepared the dinner for the evening; Roast Chicken with Chestnut Stuffing, Crispy Smoked Bacon and finger coating Gravy, Brenda’s vegetables were Cauliflower and Broccoli baked in a Cheese Sauce, Carrot and Baby White Turnips Mash, Cabbage with Alselgas, Garden Peas, New Potatoes and my Goose Fat Roast Potatoes. Meanwhile Mano and Carlos went with Dave and Debs for a round of golf at the local course, it ended up all square after 18 holes! We topped off the Trifle with Whipped Cream and sprinkled with Hazelnuts and Chocolate, the Tapas for nibbles with the Kir Royal were Local Chorizo, Cured Ham, Manchaga Cheese, Foie Pate and Prawns with Marie Rose Sauce. With the meal we had opened a Magnum of Vina Albali, Reserva 2006 which we had been saving for just such an occasion. A great night was had by all after which we retired up to Bar Rojas for Carajillo’s sat under the Sonbrajo, with its new waterproof cover, in the warm balmy night air-still in our shirt sleeves ! We took Lumy one of the trifles as she had never seen or had one and the reports this morning from her two sons and her husband along with her were spectacular and delicious - honest! Dave and Debs it was so nice to see you again and welcome you to sunny Manilva!! The pictures are at the bottom of the picture blog below;
Earlier in the evening before the gang arrived we had popped up to Calle Mar to check out the Xmas market as you can see in the other pictures below, all the stalls were local people with local goods, as you can see, it is on for four days.
This morning we were out early to catch the bus down to Duquesa to pick up the meats for Xmas; it is another beautiful day here in sunny Manilva-shirt sleeves again, the bus came along and as you can see in the pictures above we were the only people on it! The forecast has just been on the TV and its more of the same over the Xmas weekend into next week; as we were going out the draw for the National Lottery “ El Gordo-The Big One ” had just started on all the TV channels, sadly we did not have the winning number but a small village in Northern Spain did ! We called into the bank and the English supermarket on our way to the butchers where we found Gravy Browning which we have been looking for; the pictures above show what we came back with, Rib of Beef and a Topside of Beef, a Crown of Turkey with the Legs separate with freshly made Chipolatas, a Gammon joint with the freshly made, as we were there, Farmhouse and Cumberland Sausages and finally some fresh Parsnips!! Mano picked us up and dropped us back in the village; we then went for a walk with Cheta around the market as you can see in the picture above of the Bouncy Castle in front of the Old Town Hall, check out the blue sky. We bought a small slice of Apple Tart and some Vanilla Fudge from the stalls and were ripped off – the prices were extortionate – we will say something to the Mayor and our local councilor when we see them,Lumy said the same thing about the prices as well so it is not just us !
Tonight is Cold Chicken for supper followed by the Spanish soap on the TV.
Thought for the Day;
Your beliefs may suit your mind, but do they fit the facts.
