MANILVA ON SEMANA SANTA WEEKEND
SATURDAY 30th/
SUNDAY 31st/ MARCH 2013.
We had a
little lie in on Saturday morning after being out and about on Friday evening;
the ‘Procesion De La Soledad’ – the silent procession when nobody speaks and
all the instructions for carrying the ‘Tronos’ are done with a beat of the
ceremonial staff, on Friday night sadly did no take place because of the rain.
Mano called
in with the papers and confirmed that they will be able come for dinner on
Sunday; we caught up with chores around the house, the shutters were blown off
the front door, twice so we had to re-hang them with help from some of our neighbours.
At lunchtime as promised Tim rang us on the Skype video so we were able to
speak to his daughter Stacy and a gorgeous ten year old young lady, her daughter
Olivia! We have known Stacy since she was a baby in the womb and have very many
happy memories of the time as she and Ben grew up!
In the
afternoon I watched the Premier League over in England, both City and Everton
won and later over here in ‘La Liga’ both Real Madrid and Barcelona were held
to draws away – Messi meanwhile was writing his name in the history books,
becoming the first player to score against each team in the’ La Liga’ in his 19th
successive match ! Later on the Channel 4 sports news on the Spanish TV I caught all the goals from
here,England,Italy and Germany on their sports round up; In the afternoon we
watched on TDP the live coverage from Miami of the Sony Open Tennis, Serena
Williams stormed back to sink Sharapova in three sets to win her sixth title in
Miami.
In the
evening for dinner we had ‘Steak a la Plancha’ with Sauté Onions and Mushrooms
along with sliced Green Beans and crisp chips; the late film was “ Gone Baby
Gone ”from 2008, it is directed by Ben Affleck and stars his brother Casey
Affleck along with Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman and Michelle Morgan in a very
gripping story of a kidnapped young girl.
This
morning we got up late after the change in the clocks going forward; the Sunday
parade at lunchtime of the ‘Procesion Del Santisimo Cristo Resucitado Y LA
Stma. Virgen Rosario A.M.D.G.’ was cancelled as the forecast was rain, it has
not rained but is very overcast and windy so they did a quick walk around the
square in front of the congress centre and went back inside as you can see in
the pictures above. So we carried on and sorted out our Easter Sunday Roast Leg
of Lamb, locally reared and killed by Manolo from Bar Rojas, I studded it with Garlic cloves and rubbed it with Virgin Olive Oil
and Rosemary; Brenda’s vegetables are Cauliflower and Broccoli Florets in a
three cheese sauce, sugar glazed Baby Carrots, Garden Peas and Baby Brussels
Spouts with Smoked Bacon snippets; I have made a dish of ‘Boulangere’ Potatoes
and some turned New Potatoes that I’ am going to roast in the oven and the
finger coating Gravy is also made! See the pictures above !!We all enjoyed our Easter meal, four clear plates to prove it !
Liverpool
have just beaten Aston Villa 1-2, we are now going to watch the Boat Race on
the PC on the BBC1 live coverage and then its time for the Sony Open tennis
final over in Miami between Andy Murray and David Ferrer downstairs on the
large screen TV. Watch this space for the results later.
PS; Oxford have just won !
PPS; Andy Murray won in a very exciting game
The late film that we caught was " Blood Diamonds" from 2006,a political war thriller based in Sierra Leone starring Leonardo DiCapirio,Dijmon Hounsu and Jennifer Connelly-not to be missed.

Thoughts
for the Day;
The man who
smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. Everything is funny as long as it is
happening to somebody else.

MANILVA DURING SEMANA SANTA WEEK
THURSDAY 28th/
FRIDAY 29th/ MARCH 2013.
Thursday
was yet another in between day, weather wise with sun and then clouds and a
little wind, then more sun, then rain – but the temperature’s remain at
20degs+! We pottered about the house and then went for a walk down to the
Mirador by Bodega Augustine; as we were sat having a coffee Barbara came along
with her three kids,Jake,Megan and Leah – it was her birthday and they were
taking her out for lunch at Bodega Augustine so we had a chat and caught up
with her news. In the evening for supper we had flattened Chicken Fillets
griddled and then sprinkled with Balsamic Vinegar along with dry Sauté Potatoes
and Green Beans – the late film was taken from an American Min-TV series “
Spartacus” from 2004 with Goran Visnijc in the title role, Allan Bates not
looking well, Angus MacFadyen,Ben Cross and Ross Kemp ( Eastenders!) playing
the Gladiator trainer dressed in a Roman skirt costume showing his dumpy legs –
hilarious ! Kirk Douglas where are you?!
Good Friday
morning after a little lie in we had our tea and toast and planned our weekend
ahead; it is a strange long week after shopping on Wednesday and no papers
today! No walk with the dog, just a quick whiz around the bloc as it was rather
windy - in fact our front door shutters where blown at one stage! Brenda made
as you can see in the picture below her rather special Prawn Cocktails with her
signature ‘ Marie Rose’ sauce for our lunch. I made contact on the Skype video
with Tim and Thea after speaking to Jo,home from university for Easter, to wish
them a ‘Happy Easter’ – we caught up with all their news and they are calling
us back today as Tim’s daughter Stacy is coming around to their house with her
daughter ‘Olivia’ who is ten – we can’t believe it – time really does fly!! We
are looking forward to speaking to them as we have only seen a few pictures of
her as she has been growing up.
PROCESION DEL SANTO
ENTIERRO Y NTR. SRA. DE LOS DOLORES;
In the
early evening at 7-30pm we went out to catch the parade of the two ‘Tronos as
they entered Calle Mar; sadly no sign of them and we then found out that they
had been curtailed due to the threat of rain as they set off from the congress
centre. We dashed down to the centre and I managed to catch them up as they
returned as you can see in the pictures above, I have also used some pictures
from ‘The Resident’ newspaper photographer! Thanks. I also picked up a copy of
the Spanish edition of ‘Sur’ which had a large picture of the Spanish Legion
and the Legionnaires on parade in the morning carrying Jesus on the Cross
before placing it on the Tronos for later – see the picture above.
We returned
to the village and called into Bar Rojas for a quick one before dinner, Lumy’s
younger son Paco was carrying one of the ‘Tronos as you can see; we also picked
up our Tapas lunch for today as Lumy had made a Pea Frittata and a fish
Empanada, a ‘Galicia’ Tuna and Egg Pie, a flat pastry pie a bit like a Cornish Pastie!
As we were talking my mobile went, it was Lilli on Skype from Finland ringing to wish us “ Happy Easter”-
we had a nice long chat and we put her on to Lumy and Manolo for a chat as
well! It was so nice to hear from the folks – we miss them terrible!! Come back
all is forgiven !! For dinner we had
our Manilva style ‘Fish and Chips’ – Fillets of Hake in a ‘Cruz Campo’ Beer Batter,
which I made in the morning, with square chips and tinned mushy peas ! We then
caught the end of another American Mini TV series “ Attila the Hun ”from 2001
with Gerard Butler in the main role – all action – no acting!
Thoughts
for the Day;
Nothing but
heaven itself is better than a friend who really is a friend. Friendship isn’t a big thing – it’s a million
little things.

ANDALUCIA THURSDAY NIGHT
FRIDAY 29th/
MARCH 2013.
SEMANA SANTA IN
ANDALUCIA THURSDAY NIGHT;
The
pictures below were taken from our large screen TV last night as the ‘1 Canal
Sur TV Channel’ followed the parades as they happened around the region; In
particular the coverage of Malaga was very comprehensive, the atmosphere is
totally different, a lot more ‘Light and Happy’ as the commentators said. We
missed the start of the day when the Spanish Legion parades with its marching
band and honor guard behind their Tronos, heads held back, high arms and high
legs at the ‘Legionnaires’ slow march – very impressive!
The Grand
‘Tronos’ weigh over 5000kilos and need between 250/300 ‘Costaleros’ to carry
them – they are kept in special buildings as they can’t fit through the church
doors and are put together weeks in advance; the pictures of the ‘ Costaleros’
on their knees and then their hands is when they have to maneuver the Tronos
out of the cathedral door, a bit like letting the air out of the tires!
In the main
cities all over the country the same parades are happening, the bigger the
town, the larger and more Tronos take part; each ‘Hermandades’ has its
different regalia and colours as you can see and also the bigger the Tronos the
bigger and more grand the band. There are two types of ‘Tronos’ the one carried
on the shoulders with the ‘Costaleros’ on view and the other ones are when they
are underneath and carry them across the back of their necks and shoulders –
theses are a lot harder as you can imagine!
Thought for
the Day;
Believe it
can be done. When you believe something can be done, really believe, you mind
will find the way to do it.

MANILVA THURSDAY NIGHT
THURSDAY 28th/
MARCH 2013.
PROCESSION
OF “ JESUS NAZARENO ”
After our
supper we wrapped up and went out at about 11-30pm to watch the parade as it
entered the village; because this year it is starting down at the congress
centre it takes longer especially as there is a short but steep hill up to main
road by the surgery. The route is longer as well so it was after 1-00am before
it reached Calle Mar; as you can see in the pictures below ( Not very good due
to the time! ) It was good turnout considering the time as we walked along with
band playing the haunting ‘Marchas’ Tonight there are two parades, one at
7-30pm for the ‘Entierr y Ntra. Sra. De La Soledad’and much later a 1-00am the
‘Silent’ parade- watch this space.
Before we
went out we were watching on the main Andalusia Channel ‘1 Canal Sur TV ’ there
extensive coverage of the grand parades in the various cities; Malaga ,Granada ,Jaen , Seville ,Cordoba etc. and so I took the
pictures above off the main large screen TV – the larger the city, the larger
the ‘Tronos’and more of them! Some of them are spectacular – next year we are
going to Malaga on the council coach to take in the atmosphere.

MANILVA AT EASTER
WEDNESDAY
27th/ MARCH 2013.
After our
tea and toast we waited for the dog to come crashing in and then went for a
walk around the village; it was warm and sunny with just a little breeze and
the forecast for over the weekend is no rain and more sun, tomorrow it is going
to get to 24degs. by lunchtime! Anna called in just before lunchtime for a
chat, she is going to pick the papers up on Saturday morning, hopefully and we
have asked Mano and Anna around on Sunday for our Easter Sunday Roast – ‘Leg of
Spanish Lamb ’with all the trimmings.
I finished
my book in the afternoon and have started another one;at the same time we
watched the afternoon classic “ The Fall of the Roman Empire ” a epic film from
1964 with Sophia Loren,Stephen Boyd,Alex Guinness.James Mason,Christopher
Plummer,Mel Ferrer and Omar Sharif,to name just a few! For supper we had Pork
Cutlets with Lyonnaise Potatoes and then settled down to watch the late film –
the remake of “ The Flight of the Phoenix ”from 2004 with Dennis Quaid and
Giovanni Ribsi? – the original from 1965 had a ensemble cast of James
Stewart,Richard Attenborough,Peter Finch,Hardy Kruger,Ernest Borgnine,Ian
Bannen,Ronald Fraser,George Kennedy.Dan Duryea and Christian Marquand – now
there is a cast and as usual the original is the best!
PS; After supper we called Jack and Lyn over in Melbourne on the Skype video to wish them " Happy 4th Wedding Anniversary " and at the same time 'Happy Easter' It was 10-00pm here and 8-00am over in Australia ! Annette has arranged her flight back with them to Australia and is now booking her flight to us in Spain - meanwhile Jack and Lyn are going to arrange their flight to us from Liverpool or Manchester - then Norah and Jenny will do the same - hopefully!

Thoughts
for the Day;
Easter
spells out beauty, the rare beauty of new life. Green Christmas,White Easter. Easter so longed for is gone in a day.
