MANILVA OVER THE WEEKEND.

SATURDAY 18th/ AUGUST 2012.

Well after a very hot night we had a little lie in and then freshened our selves up; we walked up to Bar Rojas at about 12-0clock and got a seat under the Sonbrajo so as we could watch the ‘ Classic Car Rally ’come through the village along Calle Mar ; on the poster it indicated a 10-00pm start in ‘Castillo De La Duquesa – but no other details as to timing’s here and down in Sabinillas and the Marina ! As we had a cool drink in the very hot sunshine an English lady, on her own, came along and sat on the next table, we spoke to her firstly to help her choose a drink and Tapas – then we got into a conversation with her, ‘ Di ’was on her own staying at an apartment of a friend as her husband was busy working in the live concert music business, she had flown in to Gibraltar and then made her way here; she is a child protection officer at Holland Park Comprehensive School and lives in Twickenham. We gave her some local information and bus time-tables, sadly still no local buses on Saturday and Sunday’s up and down to Sabinillas – the time table at the bus stop is six year out of date ! We had a lovely chat as we sat and waited, and waited and waited for the cars to arrive ! When they did finally arrive at about 2-30pm they came in convoy closely packed together, not very slowly and did not stop in Calle Mar ,as normal but carried on and went back down to Sabinillas with the Police escort siren ringing !! It was very difficult to get all the pictures and I missed a lot of the cars and could not speak to the owners and get their car details – not very good organizing by the council, especially Emllio the doctor who is Deputy Mayor and responsible for Tourism and organized the whole event! In fact no sign of any councilors and not many villagers in the street !! When I next see somebody I will telling them our thoughts on the matter !! Meanwhile the football season has kicked off here and in England ; sadly it started with a bad loss to West Brom for Liverpool 3-0 under the new manager ! Over here Malaga are top of the ‘Liga ’ for the present as they won away, today Barcelona and Real Madrid kick off with home games – later this week they play one another in the ‘ Super Cup ’- like the ‘Charity Shield ’over in England. Watch this space.

In the early evening before supper we watched the start of the ‘ Vuelta D’Espana ’from Pamplona – it was a spectacular setting for the first stage, a Team Time Trial around the city- it was over only 16kms and took each team around 19 mins – they start with the full nine members and end with five as it is the fifth man across the line that stops the clock ! The final mile was over the ‘ Bull Run ’along the narrow cobbled streets as the entered the old part of the city trough the old walls – it ended in the center of the spectacular famous Bull Ring !! Very exciting – Chris Froome is trying for his first tour win ,he was second last year and Alberto Contador is back after suspension – so watch this space – today’s stage is from Pamplona to Viana over 186kms in the ‘ Navarra ’wine region of Rioja.

For supper we had Entrecote steaks again, which were delicious, the crisp fat was sweet. We then caught the late classic film “ Dirty Harry ”from 1971 with ‘ Clint ! ’The late. late film was a TV series in two parts made by good old ‘Granada Television ’and starring Ray Winstone in his first historical costume drama as “ Henry VIII ! The mega British cast included Joss Ackland,David Suchet,Sean Bean,Helen Bonham Carter,Emilia Fox and Emily Blunt amongst many others ! A classic different version not to be missed.
