OVERCAST BUT DRY IN SUNNY MANILVA AT THE START OF THE WEEKEND;

FRIDAY 10th/ JANUARY 2014.

We were up bright and breezy this morning and after our breakfast we shot down to Sabinillas for our usual shopping; today it’s overcast and cloudy and by our standards cool – only 18degs! Possible a little rain tomorrow then picking up over the rest of the weekend into next week.

We went to the supermarket first and in the fish market I bought a whole ‘Rodaballo – Turbot’ for tonight’s supper, We then called into the Chinese Bazaar for some bits and pieces before picking up the papers. On the way home we stopped at the local market for the fresh flowers – as we were up-packing back at the house Chispa came charging in so we then went for a short walk to the chemists in Calle Mar and picked up some Steak from the butchers for our Saturday night supper.

Yesterday lunchtime we called in to see our friend Antonio, who lives at the bottom of our street, we meet him for our Sunday Paella lunch up at Bar Rojas, he’s had another fall, his third in as many years, this time he has damaged his Pelvis, the last two were both his hips! It turns out that we just missed him falling as he was out walking on his two crutches when we passed and talked to him, he was entering the cemetery next to the church just before New Years Eve when it happened!

Today is definitely an at home day so we are catching up with chore around the house, well Brenda is as I’ am up in the office on the WWW!

This evening for supper I will bake the whole Turbot in the oven ‘ A La Meuniere style’ – then fillet it - we are having Garden Peas and Baby New Potatoes tossed in foaming butter with some Homemade Tartar sauce on the side.

Last night’s film was “ Training Day ”from 2001 which starred Denzel Washington givening a towering performance as a corrupt New York cop for which he won the ‘Oscar’ for Best Actor! The role was totally not what you expect of him and he was ably supported by Ethan Hawke as his ‘Rookie’ cop/partner working for him on his first day in the Department; Hawke was also nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ but did not win!
Don’t miss it!!

SUNNY AND STILL WARM MANILVA ON THURSDAY;

THURSDAY 14th/ NOVEMBER 2013.

Well the fine weather is still hanging on but it’s now forecasting that we will have some rain on Saturday and Sunday as it goes a little cold! We have just been for our walk around the village with the dog, the sky is blue and its still shirt-sleeve weather as you can see; the work on the church is still on-going, this morning they are taking down a lot of the scaffolding but the walls don’t look any different, I’am going to check as Mano says that its going to be clad in local stone, so why take the scaffolding down?

Mano and Anna have just called on their way home from Mano finishening work; earlier I made tonight’s supper ‘Albondegas – Meatballs’ in a rich Tomato & Pepper sauce, I use my Tomato salsa and add diced Red & Yellow Peppers, Onions and Mushrooms that I have sweated off in vegetable stock along with some secret ingredients! Tonight I will cook the Spaghetti and Brenda has got ready some diced Green Beans.

Tomorrow morning we are our first thing to go shopping down in Sabinillas, we have sorted out the menu’s for when Tim is here and are getting in extra Beer, Red Wine and some ‘goodies’! After talking to Mano this morning we will have to watch out on Monday morning when we go to Gibraltar to pick him up as the Guardia Civil on the border are now at different times of the day subjecting the people walking out of Gibraltar to full body searches! I have the live web-cam of the border on the PC so will be able to see what’s happening?!

Last nights film was an interesting true story called “ One Man’s Hero ”from 1999,it’s about Irish Catholic immigrants who join the American Army but are then subject to abuse by the majority Protestant officer’s; it takes place back in 1846/48 as America invaded Mexico, they desert after being flogged for no reason and are led by their Sergeant,’ Tom Riley’ played by Tom Berenger. They are formed into the “ Saint Patrick’s Battalion” and fight for Mexico against the USA ! Joaquim De Almedida and Daniela Romo also star in the tale – watch it to find out what happened ! Even today on ‘Saint Patrick’s Day’ they are still remembered in Mexico !

MANILVA.

TUESDAY 3rd JULY 2012.

Today we had a quiet day at home; Cheta came in the morning for a short while as she is off to the family ‘Campo ‘for a least a couple of weeks, at this time of the year all the locals de-camp to them for the hot summer time and our street goes very quiet and you don’t see as many of the regular locals. I followed the ‘Tour ’in the office and Brenda was up on the roof terrace doing the ironing before we had our evening cocktails and read our latest books. For supper we had Chicken Curry with Basmati Rice which I had made in the morning and then settled down to watch a film; we really enjoyed it as we caught it right from the start, “Along came a Spider” from 2001 is a story of an abduction of a young girl and the subsequent hunt for her; it is very gripping and at the end there is a big twist! The film was taken from a ‘ James Patterson ’ book in the ‘ Alex Cross ’ series, in fact the first and the part was perfectly cast by the excellent Morgan Freeman along with Michael Wincott and Monica Potter – Do not miss it !
