The RMS TITANIC was a British passenger ship that sank in the North Atlantic on the night of the 14/15th April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton on route to New York. She was carrying 2223 people and 1514 died in one of deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time and was operated by the Whit Star Line and was built between 1909-11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She only had enough lifeboats ( 20 ) for 1178 people – a third of its total passenger and crew capacity.
